This is, indeed, a mask off moment. Here a newly minted academic declares without a hint of self doubt that a proposition obvious to almost everyone not too long ago, and obvious to many now—that not all cultures have the same contemporary capacity for constitutional self-government—is bigoted and racist. It is arguments like this and the cavalier confidence with which they are freely asserted in the halls of academia that make everything Trump wants to do to the universities seem so eminently justified.

In case I need to break it down, I said:

1. It can take 1,000 years to develop habits of thought and culture that make liberal democracy and constitutional government possible.

2. You can’t import millions of people without assimilation *today* and expect them to share those important habits.

Somehow AMK interprets me as saying, the English wanted assimilation in 1215???

To whatever extent this is correct, as far as “literal threats to Our Democracy” go, the federal government’s struggles to enforce immigration laws (retroactively and en masse, I would note) are at most secondary to the federal government’s open disdain for due process
