TradFi, real estate or gold are not only the next frontier of RWAs, it’s also trading cards
5 platforms are racing to dominate this "rip --> trade --> redeem" niche, combining Gacha game features + dopamine, enabled with crypto rails.
Good to see more mainstream games/hobbies come on-chain, and what more the Pokemon craze with booster pack rips and PSA graded cards.
The gacha-pull/box-rip craze is peaking right now (just refer to the Labubu and Pokemon booster packs)
• Casino-grade dopamine loop: they run on a variable-ratio reinforcement --> the same unpredictable reward schedule that makes slot machines addictive and causes people endlessly scroll TikTok (light up dopamine pathways)
• Ties in with livestreaming popularity: watching a creator crack a box in real time lets thousands of fans share the adrenaline rush (applies to @ishowspeedsui and Mukbang livestreams too)
• Scarcity fuels speculation: blind boxes hide ultra-rare “secret” editions that people can flip for thousands of dollars. This effectively means every card or box rip is a mini-lottery (casino/gambling theory)
• Lipstick Theory: millennials and Gen Zs now drive the highest volume in the toy market, as cheap nostalgia doubles up as social flexes (everyone wants to own a Labubu) in a relatively poor economy
Projects covered
• @ripdotfun on @base: building a degen arcade where users can watch packs being ripped live (on camera), farm XP and flip the NFT while they are at it
• @Courtyard_io on @0xPolygon: building a vault-grade card custody with credit-card checkout, zero storage fees and most importantly web2 ui/ux
• @dripshop_live on @Ronin_Network: where Twitch meets eBay --> creator-led box breaks + auctions
• @phygitals on @solana: tokenised packs, Tensor marketplace and upcoming Solana Mobile push
• @Collector_Crypt on @solana: graded cards mint as pNFTs, Gacha mystery drops, DeFi collateral coming soon
All with the same mission --> turn static and idle collectibles into liquid, programmable assets that resides on-chain.
They all have different moats in content, custody, community and collateral.
Some questions/doubts I had for some of these projects:
• What specific provenance trail do they record from distributor to warehouse to on-chain mint? Where is this trail stored on?
• How do they determine that the “proof-of-rip” video is real, and that it is not spoofed or spliced?
• What is the margins on the trading card packs after fees and incentives and shipping?
• How do they hedge card-price volatility between time of purchase, on-chain sale, and potential redemption by users months later?
• How sticky are users currently and what makes them come back?
• IP related issues such as explicit licensing path with The Pokémon Company
• All these projects are currently tokenless, do they intend to tokenise equity or revenue via a token, or remain a Web2 marketplace with crypto rails? M&A in the future?
so $CARDS by @Collector_Crypt just did a +200% in the last 24 hours
let's take a look at some stats around the TCG (trading card game) RWA landscape on Solana and see where the next opportunity could potentially be
there are 3 main projects to know about
@Collector_Crypt@phygitals@TCG_Emporium
starting off with Collector Crypt
• the earliest TCG RWA on Solana
• hitting almost $1 million weekly rev
• steady growth in both weekly revenue and volume
moving on to Phygitals
• weekly rev has seen a rather sharp increase beginning from the end of July
and lastly, TCG Emporium
• saw a sharp increase in weekly rev towards the end of June, slightly stagnant in August, but has seen increases recently
the most interesting element is the gacha
across all 3 platforms, the total gacha spins have gone parabolic
an interesting point is that users on Collector Crypt seem to have a higher spending power given the drastically higher spend on gacha / wallet
the next breakthrough in no. of users and revenue can come either from
• onboarding fans of existing card collections
• onboarding new card collections to bring in net new users
as more buyers get onboarded, we might potentially see significant growth in the secondary marketplace, eventually increasing the platform rev through tx fees
thank you @zkayAPE for the dashboard and checkout his tweet which gives a brief overview of the 3 TCG platforms
h/t to @immakookie for bringing this to my attention :)
would love to dive a bit deeper into how value accrue to $CARDS
