I am feeling deeply depressed today. The brutal annihilation of the entire Ganesh Chakraborty family is horrifying & yet, so far, not a single liberal, human-rights activist, or leftist has raised their voice in support of Hindus in Bangladesh.

His daughter was due to be married in just a few days. She was allegedly brutally raped, her eyes were gouged out, and acid was poured on her face. The sheer hatred and brutality directed against Hindus is deeply disturbing.

His wife too was raped and subjected to horrific torture. His 12-year-old son was forcibly circumcised. Ganesh himself was brutally killed.

Their only “crime” was that they were Hindus.

What makes this horror even more disturbing is the alleged treatment of the bodies after the killings—acid was reportedly poured over their faces before the bodies were dumped at the foot of the stairs.

The complete destruction of an entire Hindu family cannot simply be dismissed as an ordinary crime. If these reports are established, this would be a horrifying indictment of law and order, minority protection, and the failure of society to protect innocent human beings from communal violence.

Where are the voices that so loudly speak about human rights when the victims are Hindu?

Human rights cannot be selective. Outrage cannot depend on the religion of the victim. If you remain silent when an entire family is allegedly brutalised and killed because they are Hindu, that silence is not neutrality—it is hypocrisy.

Hardly known, rarely recalled dark side of Jyoti Basu

Jyoti Basu’s life story is nothing less than a complete black chronicle of betrayal — and it is back in the news thanks to the granddaughter of a notorious Howrah don.

Mediocre in academics

In 1992-93, Siddhartha Shankar Ray wrote a piece in Desh magazine that laid it bare. Basu went to England to sit for the ICS, given the best private tutors London could offer. The money spent on him could have educated a hundred Indian students. He failed the ICS four times.

He then switched to the Bar, failed that four times as well, and finally scraped through alongside Siddhartha Ray — who was six years younger. That is why Ray never called him “Jyoti-da”; he simply called him Jyoti.

Unpatriotic anti-Hindu

Back in India, he joined the Communist Party. On Moscow’s orders, he first opposed the 1942 Quit India movement. Then, again on Soviet instructions, he and PC Joshi spent their days heaping abuse on Netaji and conspiring to turn the whole of West Bengal into Pakistan.

Only after witnessing Direct Action Day did they realise a Pakistan would leave them with nowhere to stand. Finally, after listening to Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, Basu swallowed his pride and voted for the partition of Bengal.

After Partition, the pattern continued: inflaming the Bangal refugees, branding Bidhan Roy a bourgeois, and smearing one of the most honest politicians in the country’s history, Prafulla Chandra Sen, as a thief. In 1967 he rode that wave into power as Deputy Chief Minister.

Anti-industry mobster

The next five years brought only riots, the assault on the Birlas, factory shutdowns, the murder of Gopal Sen, the Sainbari massacre and countless other killings — met by Siddhartha Ray’s counter-blows.

When the Left Front captured power in 1977, Basu released the Sainbari killers and other mass-murderers from jail, gave them new names and identity cards, and installed them in power: one became a minister (Nirupam Sen), one an MP (Anil Basu), one the Registrar of Jadavpur University (Rajat Banerjee), and a Class-IV pass man a senior party leader (Binoy Konar). Society was sent to the dogs.

Just as Mamata Banerjee later blocked the Chingrighata Metro, Jyoti Basu blocked the entire Kolkata Metro project. He kept computers out of Bengal, allowed CESC to loot the state, abolished English-medium education, publicly humiliated the Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University on the street, and had headmasters murdered (one of them from my own school).

CITU cadres thrashed IAS officers. The wives of party cadres were installed as teachers. Higher education got 99 % reservation (the remaining 1 % for “watermelons”). *Yugantar* and *Basumati* were shut down. More than 50,000 factories closed. And 55,000 political murders took place — among many other “achievements”.

Corrupt

And how much did he personally make? He struck deals with ministers across states: contracts for them in West Bengal, contracts for his son in return. Kamal Nath received multi-crore WBSEB contracts; in exchange, Chandan Basu and Senbo (the company of Niranjan Sengupta’s nephew Kajal Sengupta) got bridge and metro work in Delhi, later extended to Kolkata Metro and countless city bridges.

By the end of his life, Basu had turned Chandan from a ₹700-a-month clerk into the owner of assets worth several thousand crores. He could never have managed that as a practising barrister — Siddhartha Ray had already noted in *Desh* that Basu did not understand the law and could not answer a judge’s questions.

At the height of his power, while his party was murdering people daily, Basu never filed a single defamation suit — the better to keep the truth from spreading.

Legacy

Jyoti Basu’s sole contribution to our lives can be summed up in one sentence, and with that the debate ends: in twenty-four years he not only destroyed West Bengal’s health, education, industry, commerce, agriculture and social fabric; he also, before dying, carefully prepared every path so that his favourite disciple could become Chief Minister and complete the remaining devastation over the next fifteen years.

One year after his death, that disciple duly became Chief Minister, ruled for fifteen years, and created a second Chandan.

The New York Times breaks the story that in March 2000, a group of Austrian art students called “Gelitin” secretly installed a balcony on the 91st floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

They photographed the balcony by helicopter, and then dismantled it.

The ease by which the students were able to make structural changes to the building without anyone noticing brings into question the security measures at the WTC.
