The European Union has offered no aid whatsoever. 🇪🇺🚫 The Brussels-installed new government is doing nothing to mitigate the pain, it has just ordered industry and families to reduce consumption. 📉 They are also blaming everything on Orbán. 🫵

But this is also a benchmark. 📊

Hungary is facing an unprecedented constitutional and political crisis.

That is the warning from Congressman @AbrahamHamadeh in his latest Washington Examiner op-ed.

Hamadeh points to the removal of constitutional officials, restrictions on political opponents, and the use of state institutions against the opposition as signs that fundamental democratic principles are under threat. He argues that conservatives should speak out in defense of constitutional government, the rule of law, and political freedom - even when the country involved is a friend and ally.

‼️ Illicit nationalisation? The new norm in Hungary.

Yesterday, the Tisza Party parliamentary majority approved the creation of the National Asset Recovery and Asset Protection Office (NVVH), a powerful new authority that paves the way for the illicit nationalisation of assets under the guise of asset recovery.

The legislation grants the office unprecedented access to bank records, official documents and other sensitive data. It is empowered to investigate companies, seize assets, and intervene in the operation of businesses where it alleges public assets have been misused. The office can exercise key powers without prior judicial authorisation, and its decisions cannot be appealed.

The creation of a single institution with powers this extensive represents a profound concentration of state authority. Vesting one office with such broad access to financial information, official records and investigative functions while reducing judicial safeguards raises serious concerns about political abuse.

This overreach evokes memories of the ÁVH, the communist-era secret police that became synonymous with political persecution, surveillance and fear. Creating a state body with such far-reaching powers over citizens’ finances, property and private information should alarm anyone who believes in the rule of law.

Democracy is not only about elections. It is about limiting the power of the state. When those in office continue to expand the state’s coercive powers while weakening institutional checks, the line between asset recovery and illicit nationalisation becomes unacceptably thin. History teaches us to pay attention.

Today, democracy and the rule of law are being dismantled in Hungary in the pursuit of unchecked power. This is nothing short of criminal conduct.

Using retroactive, tailor-made legislation, the government has barred half of the opposition, including its strongest leaders, from politics. This marks the end of democracy. If it is not the people who decide who they vote for, but those in power who decide who the people are allowed to vote for, then democracy is finished.

Through a retroactive, tailor-made constitutional amendment, they removed the President of the Republic, dismissed the President of the Constitutional Court, and forced out the Chief Prosecutor. With that, they have dismantled the rule of law as well.

What is happening in Hungary today is unprecedented.

Prosecutors arrived without prior notice at the facility hosting Fidesz’s servers to seize the party’s entire communications system and databases. Nothing like this has happened since the democratic transition in 1990.

After failing to break Fidesz’s resistance to the Tisza government’s arbitrary rule through political means, the Tisza government is now using legal means to cripple the strongest opposition party.

In a democratic state governed by the rule of law, this is unacceptable.

Using an investigation related to Hungary’s National Cultural Fund as a pretext, the authorities have weaponised the justice system against Fidesz. This only happens in dictatorships! It was deeply moving to hear this speech from a distinguished jurist who has never been a politician, yet served as the President of Hungary before being unlawfully removed from office because he refused to comply - with the approval of Berlin and Brussels, as the new Prime Minister himself admitted.

Hungary’s sovereignty is gone. We have become a colony.

🇪🇺 The Brussels-approved and Brussels-sponsored new Hungarian government is now removing the legitimate president of an EU member state in a manner that is abhorrent to both Hungarian and European constitutional traditions.

They are voting on a constitutional amendment stating:

📜 “The mandate of the President ceases the day after the publication of this amendment.”

No process.
No charges.
No articles of impeachment.
Just one sentence. ⚠️

And yet there is zero criticism or concern from Brussels.
The European Union today has no rule of law, no legal certainty, no freedom of speech, and no due process. It has become a bureaucratic autocracy. 🏛️

The member states that should rein in this insanity are themselves ruled by technocrats and postmodern liberal zealots who, in the vast majority of cases, are despised by the very people over whom they rule.

A dark day for Hungary.

Today, Parliament is adopting constitutional amendments that unlawfully remove the sitting President of the Republic and ban sitting opposition MPs from running for re-election. The former Prime Minister had already been banned from running again.

This marks the beginning of a constitutional crisis that could last for years. Ironically, it is being created by the party with the largest parliamentary majority in Hungary’s democratic history.

Why? Because, like their liberal authoritarian allies in Brussels, they may have won the election, but they know they deceived their voters. And they fear that, in a free and fair democratic contest, they would be voted out.

A government that fears the voters will always end up fearing democracy itself.

Massive crowd gathered today in 🇭🇺Budapest to resist against the unlawful dismissal of President Sulyok that could happen as early as next week.

Since the parliamentary elections in April, Prime Minister Péter Magyar has tried to humiliate, threaten and intimidate the President into resignation. As President Sulyok stood his ground, Magyar's Tisza Party put forward a constitutional amendment to remove the President from office without justification. Other heads of independent institutions that could serve as checks on the new government were also promised to be removed.

If PM Magyar and his party follow through on the threats, Hungary will soon descend into a constitutional crisis.
