The middle class is being sandwiched between the rich class and the poor class.

The middle class is caught between rising costs and rising taxes.

For the middle class, this Budget had one message. Carry on as you were.

In Parliament, I pointed out that there was no revision in income tax slabs and no increase in standard deduction, despite stagnant salaries and inflation at 6.8%. I urged the Finance Minister to correct this in this Budget itself by raising the standard deduction from ₹75,000 to ₹1.5 lakh for the salaried class.

Meanwhile, household costs keep climbing. Education 8% 🔺, healthcare 9% 🔺, rent 7% 🔺, food 6% 🔺, transport 5% 🔺.

For the first time in years, personal income tax collections are higher than corporate tax. Individuals paid around ₹11 lakh crore, corporates about ₹9.8 lakh crore.

Either give tax relief, or give investment savings & incentives so the middle class can save more and build wealth.

Recent controversy about General Naravane book and about his alleged narration of Galwan clashes made me remember Sagat Singh at Nathu La in 1967.

Sagat Singh was GOC of 17th Division responsible for Sikkim. China issued ultimatum to India to vacate Nathu La in 1965. Sagat Singh cared less about it.

In 1967, Indian Army decided to put barb wire demarcations at Nathu La as Chinese were repeatedly crossing the border. The work started under heavy protest by Chinese soldiers.

On 11 Sep 1967, Chinese opened fire on Indian troops and India suffered casualties. Soon, China opened artillery fire.

Now, in such situations of Chinese aggression, Indian troops had standing orders from high command to fall back and strengthen at defensive positions.

27th Div at Jelep La followed orders and retreated to defensive positions. Chinese took over Jelep La.

But at Nathu La, Sagat Singh refused to follow such orders & in fact opened artillery fire on Chinese without waiting for engagement orders from his superiors.

From 11 to 15 September, India rained heavy fire on Chinese side from a strong position. Chinese side suffered heavy casualties & they did not expect a fight back from India.

On 15, firing stopped and bodies of martyrs could be exchanged. Till today, India controls Nathu La.

Retrospectively, the order also came for Sagat Singh to engage with China accordingly which he already did to save the day.

Sagat Singh is probably India’s most legendary general who had a career many Caesars of the world would despise.
It all comes down to the soldier on ground.
