I am surprised to see how much Subhash Garg former Finance Secretary was belittled by an anchor who did not have the gravitas to understand what he was saying - repeatedly. If he is wrong his argument needed to be met with an equally strong rebuttal from someone with domain knowledge.

India’s GDP headlines mask a structural crisis. When gold loans expand 14.4x and personal loans 6.5x, while nominal GDP grows just 2.8x over the last 12 years, it isn’t an economic boom. It is leveraged consumption growth.

Growth today isn’t being supported by rising wages, job creation, or productive investment. It increasingly relies on household debt and pledged family assets. Middle class is in pain. Our household-level financial resilience is eroding. Families are increasingly forced to turn to high-interest personal loans and distress-driven gold loans to meet routine expenses. When citizens must pledge core assets to sustain basic consumption, it signals a systemic breakdown in real-income sustainability.

Moreover, rising national and state debt adds another layer of fragility, shifting the burden of today’s debt-driven growth onto future taxpayers and generations. Debt stress can ultimately lead to a financial crisis. Not today, not tomorrow. It’s just a matter of when the tipping point is reached.

We must change our economic path.
