Growing concerns over digital censorship and the suppression of free expression in India‼️
@IndiaAwakened_ is blocked in India ‼️
By examining how non-political content and everyday vlogs are affected alongside journalistic reporting, I emphasizes the importance of preserving open dialogue and protecting individual voices to uphold democratic values.
Take the case of a college student from Greater Noida who posted a vlog showing her attendance at the launch of the Noida International Airport in Jewar, inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi. She mentioned in her video that she didn't choose to attend out of personal interest—her college, along with several other institutions like Galgotias University, incentivized students to go by offering attendance credits.
This creator’s profile features simple, daily mini-vlogs with no political content. Yet, because her vlog revealed that the massive turnout for the Prime Minister’s event was orchestrated rather than organic, her video was taken down by Instagram following government legal requests. Faced with this pressure, she later posted a video stating she would stick strictly to entertainment content to avoid losing her channel entirely.
Seven years ago, Prime Minister Modi famously said that criticism makes democracy stronger. But when even innocent, apolitical vlogs are suppressed alongside media criticism, how can citizens contribute to a healthy democracy?
@sougat18 SIR initiative initially commenced as a successful pilot exercise in Bihar and was expanded as a nationwide rollout. The exercise has since scaled across approximately 30 states and federally administered territories.
@sougat18 This single massive exercise has resulted in more than 130 million (13 crore) names being struck off from draft voter lists nationwide amounting to roughly 13% of India's total electorate.
@sougat18 Decisions to file specific legal appeals (such as in West Bengal) and handling software glitches that locked out eligible voters (such as in Goa) were carried out without consulting or informing the full multi member body.
@sougat18 2 other ECs formally recorded written objections on record at least 14 times over a 10 months(since his appointment ) period against Gyanesh Kumar's independent actions.
