Here's an explanation of 'Meri' because I have nothing else to do and I wanna write something, lol.
For some reason, the opening part of the perf didn't have English subtitles, but it said
'Because I am an ogress, you cannot love me. In whatever future life we may be reborn, may we be soulmates. May we love each other.'
So basically that's the short summary of this story, but let's dive a bit deeper into it...
Basically, "Meri" is the daughter of the queen of the ogress realm. Her mother had gouged out the eyes of Phra Rot's mother and aunts, so "Phra Rot" traveled to this realm and ended up marrying Meri.
After getting married, he eventually discovered that she was an ogress, as well as the daughter of the woman who had taken his mother's and aunts' eyes. He got her drunk to trick her into revealing where the stolen eyes were kept. Once he got them, he fled across the ocean on his flying horse.
When Meri sobered up and realized what had happened, she transformed into her ogress form and rushed across the ocean after him, pleading with him not to leave. But Phra Rot chose his mother over his wife and left. Unable to endure the grief, Meri died of a broken heart. In the end, after he helped his mother and aunts get their eyes back, he returned to Meri, only to find that she was already dead. After seeing that, he died of a broken heart right beside her.
(The lyrics of "Meri")
(Opening part) Because I am an ogress, you cannot love me.
In whatever future life we may be reborn, may we be soulmates.
May we love each other.
My heart is breaking piece by piece
I ran out of words to plead
Oh, aching love, yet you show no mercy
You leave me behind for eternity
The sun sets and fades away
Countless years, months and days
There upon the great river's shore
Phra Rot's Meri weeps once more
Her voice laments and calls out
Oh, what karma haunts me now?
We were just together, now torn apart
Pain inside this garland blossom's heart
Once he cherished her dearly
Now he has turned her away completely
Meri has lost all hope and sits in sorrow
Tears pour down from a heart now hollow
The lovely maiden, jewel of the crown
Beats her breast and cries aloud
Her husband will not give her even a glance
Their love has slipped away with chance
Phra Rot replies, my dear, do not grieve so
Meri, you are an ogress, that fact is known
I am human, together we couldn't be
Please return home, my lady
She nearly dies having heard this
Yet her love remainds steadfast, never fading
Haunted by grief and sorrow
There is no way for her to follow
For the sea lies barring her path
At her wit's end, she can't pass
She calls until the waters echo
Is this sin, fate, or karma?
If you will not return
To me, this life is not worth living
Then she ends her life, no more breathing
Such a pity, poor thing
Unrequited love is tragic
Flood cannot reach, it's embarassing
Never look in the mirror to see own face
Someone like you should know your place
[ P.S. I hope this story helps you connect with the lyrics even more! ]
I’m gonna defend Moonshadow to my grave because it touches on a topic that is rarely addressed in GLs: mental health.Key's struggles with mental health and trauma are a huge part of why her character is so important to me. I personally feel like she’s an accurate portrayal of ++
