With heavy heart, I pass on the news that Bob McLaughlin has passed away. He was a true friend to the conference, and his remembrances of DFW helped keep alive the memory of Dave Wallace the person. My heartfelt condolences to Sally Parry.

Thirteen years after his passing, Wallace's absence still leaves an emptiness. I don't think I'm alone in wishing we had his thoughts on the past year:

@StrugglingPhDS1 Like you said — I had already put in too much to not reach the end. After that last push, though, I didn't have anything left — right now I focus on raising my son and adjuncting. I love research, but I chose family — pretty sure I'll never land a tenure-track position.
I’m not sure how I feel about #internationaldayofwomenansgirlsinscience this year. The fact that you can go from prize winning scientist to losing your job in 12 months because you were furloughed for childcare and couldn’t apply for grants suggests we need more than just a day.
@seeshespeak Ironic thing I learned in Afghanistan: sneakers grip ice better than a Vibram boot sole.
How I learned this: Literally had a helicopter medevac followed a year later with wrist surgery. After all the army training, it was walking on ice that got me. 🤣
Asking for an extension is not a sign that a student is lazy or disorganized. It means they want to take the assignment more seriously and give it their all. By denying (reasonable) extensions, we communicate to students that our timelines are more important than their learning.
@BrittnyByrom @jillyturna The responsible schools space out lunch breaks to keep children six feet apart while eating. It's not ideal, but still safer than many restaurants.
@lydiakiesling Becoming a single dad helped me appreciate how much so many women have had to sacrifice while balancing career and family. I'm still stunned by how many parents impose their judgement on *single* parents. Those with children should know that parenting alone is rarely a choice.
@em_llojo We really do. There are so many people who hide their disabilities due to a lack of public acceptance — books with everyday characters simply dealing with life and disability could help bridge that gap.
@xiaofei_lin Communicating science to the public is so important, especially now during the pandemic. Some of my best friends from grad school were in #scicomm!
We are super excited to announce the CFP for #DFW2021 in Amsterdam, celebrating 25 years of #InfiniteJest! Check out the CFP here: https://t.co/dIeePTuH2j
@LuceResists There are equal rights issues that I want to see employers promote like #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo But promoting a specific party or candidate in the workplace? Not so much. I want an employer to welcome people based on the content of their character.
@SkyHi_x0 Community college courses are just as hard, if not harder. I've taught at both universities and community colleges, and my CC actually holds me to higher standards as a teacher. They don't take quality for granted.
@RodneyDavis@IllinoisIDES I had the same issue. I filled out the online fraud form, and a week later got a letter from IDES confirming they had cancelled all payments for the fraudulent unemployment filing. Still can't believe how criminals are taking advantage of #COVID19.
@marinadsouza22@AcademicChatter@OpenAcademics I think it also depends on how much life you also have going on — and not just the life under your own roof. Worry about family and friends you can't see takes more energy than many realize.
