I had the pleasure of attending this evening’s APHM networking dinner, graciously hosted by United Imaging Healthcare at the Topaz Room, Level 2 of the Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur.

The evening commenced with a welcoming address from the President of APHM, Datuk Dr. Kuljit Singh, and United Imaging President Mr. Hong Miao, who detailed the company’s remarkable journey in Malaysia. Renowned for its cutting-edge medical imaging and state-of-the-art radiotherapy solutions, United Imaging continuously pushes the boundaries of health science through a steadfast focus on premium quality.

Given that UCSI is currently in the process of developing a forward-looking Oncology Department, this discussion could not have come at a better time.

I’m deeply saddened by the untimely loss of my dear friend, former Director General of Armed Forces Health Services, Mejar Jeneral Dato Pahlawan (Dr) R Mohana Dass (Retired), at Assunta Hospital, Petaling Jaya, this afternoon.

We first crossed paths years ago through our work, but what I came to treasure most was the man himself. He was a pleasant, warm, and engaging person. He was intelligent, generous, and always able to make you feel at ease. Dr Mohana Dass possessed that rare gift of bringing quiet truth and humanity to every role he played. He carried himself with grace and humility, and his wonderful personality made every conversation a pleasure.

I’m grateful that our paths crossed and for the memories we shared. The world has lost a remarkable medical doctor, and many of us have lost a cherished friend. He will be missed more than words can say. My deepest condolences to his family

This afternoon I delivered an enlightening executive talk titled "Whole-of-Government and Whole-of-Society (WoGoS) in action: The COVID-19 Case Study & The Lessons Learned," sharing the insights and experiences from the front lines of Malaysia's battle against the COVID-19 pandemic.

My presentation covered the initial outbreak's timeline, the strategic implementation of the WoGoS approach in managing the crisis, and the collaborative efforts across various sectors to enhance the nation's preparedness, response, and resilience. Key highlights included the operational details of the Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre (CPRC), advancements in surveillance, testing strategies, public health interventions, and the critical role of community engagement through a platform like MySejahtera.

The experience underscored the importance of solidarity, science-based strategies, and the dynamic adaptation of policies in facing public health emergencies, offering profound lessons for future crisis management.

Another stunning wedding reception this evening (26-7-26) at the Majestic Ballroom, The Majestic Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. Our warmest congratulations go to the proud parents, Datuk Seri Ir Dr Wee Ka Siong and Datin Seri Jessica Lim. May the newlyweds, Joan Wee and Xander Man, be blessed with endless love, joy, and prosperity on their journey together.

The event was graced TYT Melaka Tun Seri Setia Dr. Haji Mohd Ali bin Mohd Rustam and Toh Puan together with TYT Sarawak Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi bin Tuanku Jaafar and Toh Puan.

It also served as a wonderful reunion for friends and colleagues. It was a pleasure catching up with former Health Ministers, Tan Sri Dr Subramaniam and Tan Sri Liow Tiong Lai, former Speaker Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, and many more retired civil servants and politicians.

This morning, I met up with my old friend Fauzi for an early breakfast at Kopi & Ulam by Debunga, located at Persiaran Universiti 2, Seri Kembangan, Selangor.

This newly established café, a UPM alumni-founded venture is nestled in a gorgeous herb garden, exuding a serene sense of sunlit space. The integrated concept serves as a leaf-loving refuge, offering lontong, talam keladi, and pegaga-garnished coolers, while warmly welcoming the public to this plot on the UPM campus. The owner is Fakulti Reka Bentuk & Senibina (FRSB) alumnus Mr. Tan Peng Koon, alongside Deputy Dean Prof. Madya Dr. Shureen Faris.

Our second wedding celebration this afternoon, back-to-back receptions, with the next being that of Izuddin Syawal bin Sahrum and Intan Syazriena binti Mohd Shahidon, held at Semarak Hall, Lingkaran Cyber Point Timur, Cyberjaya, Selangor. The event was a breathtaking tribute to love and elegance, set against a stunning floral backdrop that added to its timeless beauty.

Our heartfelt congratulations go to the proud hosts, Dr. Hj. Sahrum Ses and Hjh. Kintan Abdul Samad. It was especially meaningful to reunite with them, as we were once together pursuing our studies in Adelaide back in 1997, a memory truly worth treasuring.

This afternoon, we attended the wedding reception of Noor Syazana Binti Nazor Ilahi and Sajjad Bin Hassan, held at Awan Space Emerald Hall, Level 1, Bangunan Wangsa 118, Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur.

It was a wonderful gathering of friends and colleagues, made even sweeter by the chance to reconnect with my former schoolmate from Methodist Boys School Kuala Lumpur and a truly cherished moment.

This morning, I attended the Opening Ceremony of the UCSI University 24th Annual Public Health Campaign (PHC) 2026, hosted at the Pink Court, Level 2, Pavilion Bukit Jalil.

As one of the university’s flagship community outreach programmes, the campaign is committed to promoting preventive healthcare, healthy lifestyles, and overall community wellness. Running from 24 to 26 July 2026, this year's initiative carries the theme "Protection is Power, Love with Responsibility," with a dedicated focus on HPV and HIV prevention through awareness, early detection, and accountable health practices.

Over the three-day event, attendees can take advantage of a broad array of complimentary health services and educational activities. Free health screenings will be available for HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis C, blood glucose, blood pressure, cholesterol, body fat, and waist circumference.

Today was one of those profoundly rewarding days that truly captures the essence of our work with patients and families. The morning began in the Operating Room with a total thyroidectomy for a large multi-nodular goiter, followed by a long list of clinic patients.

Sharing special moments with patients and their loved ones serves as a powerful reminder of why our clinical team gives its best every day. It was an incredibly meaningful day, rooted in patient-centered care, cohesive teamwork, and shared accountability.

It was a hectic but highly rewarding return to clinic and ward rounds at UCSI Hospital today, particularly seeing our post-op patients recovering so well in follow-ups.

I'm especially grateful to my nurse, Shamini Sadha Sivam, for her multilingual skills, exceptional multitasking, and warm patient interactions that keep my clinic running smoothly. I’m proud to work with this incredible nursing team as we uphold our standard of top-tier care and a positive journey for every patient at UCSI Hospital.

Delighted to share that yesterday, we successfully performed the first two Lasik PRESBYOND 2.0 cases in Negeri Sembilan, marking another significant milestone for our refractive surgery service at UCSI Hospital. PRESBYOND is a premium LASIK treatment specifically designed for presbyopic patients.

On post-op Day 1 today, both patients are already enjoying good distance and near vision without glasses. A proud milestone for UCSI Hospital and our team. A big thank you to the entire UCSI Specialist Eye Center (USEC) team for the teamwork and support in making this possible!

A Proud Milestone for Malaysia’s Heart Care

I am proud to share that Institut Jantung Negara (IJN) has been awarded the European Association of Preventive Cardiology (EAPC) Centre Accreditation for Cardiovascular Risk Management and Prevention, making Malaysia the first country in Asia to receive this prestigious recognition.

This achievement reflects IJN’s unwavering commitment to delivering preventive cardiovascular care that meets internationally recognised standards. It reinforces our belief that the future of heart care lies not only in treating disease, but also in preventing it through early detection, personalised care and evidence-based practice.

What an incredible journey this has been! Our family trip to the UK was already shaping up to be the adventure of a lifetime, but nothing could have prepared us for the emotional high of seeing our son, Muhammad Khazin, stride across that graduation stage.

Hearing his name called and watching him collect his First Class Honours degree in Economics and Finance from Manchester University filled us with overwhelming joy and pride. It was the ultimate validation of his dedication, perseverance and great blessings. And just when we thought our hearts couldn't burst with more joy, we learned that he has been appointed to join JP Morgan, starting his new role at this esteemed investment firm in a mere fortnight. We are beyond excited to see where this next chapter takes him.

This afternoon, I met up with Hajar Mat Noji, a PhD student in Health Economics and Health Technology Assessment at the University of Glasgow, at Toro’s Steakhouse in Manchester. I was interviewed for her thesis on, “Assessing cost-effectiveness and affordability of new expensive treatment options and impact on sustainability of health systems.”

I shared the case study on Hepatitis C in Malaysia on how we made several critical policy decisions, from decentralising care from hospitals to community clinics, to driving the urgency of finding the “missing millions,” and maximizing the cost-saving impact of hepatitis C elimination programs aligned with the WHO’s 2030 target.

Our overall progress speaks for itself. Working with the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND) on point-of-care testing, and securing access to affordable therapeutics (STORM-C-1 trial) for hepatitis C, coupled with the groundbreaking EASE study where we reduced treatment duration from 12 weeks to 8 weeks and slashing costs by a third without compromising efficacy.

Today, Malaysia is actively working to find the missing millions of undiagnosed Hepatitis C patients, aiming for elimination by 2030. With improved point-of-care diagnostics and therapeutic access, the country is on track to drastically reduce and eliminate Hepatitis C and its complications, including liver cancer, cirrhosis, and liver failure

This morning, I had the pleasure of visiting the Developing Humanitarian Medicine (DHM) program at the Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute (HCRI) at the Ellen Wilkinson Building, University of Manchester, United Kingdom.

I shared our journey and Malaysia’s experience on access to affordable medicines for Hepatitis C, together with many creative ideas and innovations, which are a part of humanitarian response and global health studies. More importantly, we explored opportunities for collaboration between UCSI and the University of Manchester.

It was a pleasure to meet with Dr Nicolas Lemay‑Hebert (Executive Director and Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies), Dr. Lu Chen and Dr. Janelle Winters (Research Fellows), and postgraduate students.

From start to finish, our conversation was deeply engaging. I hope the shared experience will leave lasting memories. We concluded with a wonderful luncheon at Refuge Restaurant. I would like to thank Dr. Lu Chen for making all the necessary arrangements for my visit.
