The speech that Swami Vivekananda delivered in Chicago on 11 September 1893 is worth reading again and again. Here, I quote the concluding passage from that speech:
The present convention, which is one of the most august assemblies ever held, is in itself a vindication, a declaration to the world of the wonderful doctrine preached in the Gita: “Whosoever comes to Me, through whatsoever form, I reach him; all men are struggling through paths which in the end lead to me.” Sectarianism, bigotry, and its horrible descen­dant, fanaticism, have long possessed this beautiful earth. They have filled the earth with vio­lence, drenched it often and often with human blood, destroyed civilization and sent whole nations to despair. Had it not been for these horrible demons, human society would be far more advanced than it is now. But their time is come; and I fervently hope that the bell that tolled this morning in honor of this convention may be the death-knell of all fanaticism, of all persecutions with the sword or with the pen, and of all uncharitable feelings between persons wending their way to the same goal.

To each his own. It would be interesting to note what Nobel laureate Romain Rolland remarked about him. Rolland called him “this man with the nature of a lion”—a type whom “Europe is too apt to forget when she judges India”—because he was “that rare combination: a thinker of action with a genius for leadership.”

The Brahmo Samaj and the Arya Samaj both opposed idol worship, but they cannot be regarded as fanatical iconoclasts by any stretch of the imagination. This opposition was largely an offshoot of monistic strands that originated in the Vedic texts, hence Swami Dayanand Saraswati’s distinctive call: “Back to the Vedas.” Having said that, it would be idle to claim that they were entirely uninfluenced by the Abrahamic religions flourishing at the time. The intermingling of different religious traditions enriches each tradition in many ways.

Let us stop reducing the sublime message of the Bhagavad Gita to the level of our narrow minds. According to the Bhagavad Gita, Shudras, Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and Vaishyas do not refer to any particular class of people. Lord Krishna had already divided all people into only two classes, which may be translated as decent and indecent people. He delineated at length the attributes of the both:
दम्भो दर्पोऽभिमानश्च क्रोधः पारुष्यमेव च।
अज्ञानं चाभिजातस्य पार्थ संपदमासुरीम्॥
Hypocrisy, arrogance, conceit, anger, harshness, and ignorance are the attributes of an indecent person. Once again, according to the predominance of certain qualities, He divides people into three categories: sattvic, rajasic, and tamasic. So, what was the need for further dividing people?
A decent and sattvic person might still lack an aptitude for learning, military service, or business. Therefore, any other occupation would fall into the category of service. If anyone has the slightest doubt about this, they may apply the principles of universality and timelessness to any message.
The closest English equivalent of the concept of varna is “aptitude.” Is it not an ideal concept that everyone should be free to pursue the vocation suited to their innate interests and abilities?
Lord Krishna was a universal mind, and His message was not intended for any particular group but for all people. Narrow interpretations—based on our limited understanding, lacking universal appeal, and unable to stand the test of time—have already caused considerable damage. We must resolve to put an end to them.

The saying, ‘A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household,’ applies to Gandhi to some extent as well. In his own hometown—meaning, in his own country—it is not that he is dishonored; rather, he has been ‘misunderstood’ in the sense that no particular group—the Hindus, the Muslims, or the then-called ‘Depressed Classes’—could claim him exclusively or sectarianly as their own. This was his bane in the eyes of many, even though it is precisely what makes him appear greater to those who understand him. I am sure the book will be a great read.

वर्ण का यदि कोई सटीक अंग्रेज़ी पर्याय हो सकता है तो वह है Aptitude (अभिवृत्ति )। संसार में जहाँ कहीं भी व्यक्ति को अपने Aptitude ( रूचि+योग्यता) के अनुसार व्यवसाय चुनने की निर्बाध स्वतन्त्रता हो तो वहाँ वर्ण व्यवस्था की प्रतिष्ठा है । इस निर्बाध स्वतन्त्रता की शर्त यही हो सकती है कि किसी भी व्यवसाय विशेष को ऊँचा या नीचा न समझा जाए । मूल रूप में यही वर्ण व्यवस्था की संकल्पना थी लेकिन कालांतर में किसी कार्य विशेष के लिए हासिल प्रतिष्ठा संतति को भी सहज रूप से मिल जाए इस मोह ने धीरे धीरे-धीरे जातियों का विकास किया । फिर तो यह समय भी आया कि सुविधाओं और अनर्जित प्रतिष्ठा को संरक्षित करने के मोह में लोगों के मौलिक अधिकारों से वंचित करने का सिलसिला शुरू हो गया । ऊँच-नीच की भावना जनमानस में इस कदर घर कर गई कि ब्राह्मणों के भी कई वर्ग हो गए । जब बँटने का सिलसिला शुरू हो जाता है तो वह Nuclear Fission की तरह रुकता नहीं एक chain reaction का सृजन करता है । मूल रूप से एक उदात्त संकल्पना का विभत्स और विस्फोटक रूप है जातिवाद ।

Well said, except that we cannot reduce Him. Puny as we are, we become further diminished by any such attempt. Secondly, if we forget Him, it is our misfortune. The Gita, which is a celestial song, should be listened to with an open mind. Then one will find that it leads us safely, as it were, by the hand through the quagmires of our lives.
