Someone asked where you might save €1bn from the Government’s spending to help cushion fuel inflation (which ultimately will drive food and ESB prices). Here’s four suggestions

Cancel the €1bn order with the French for 200 combat vehicles and howitzers. We have perfectly serviceable Mowags. Unless of course we need new vehicles for domestic repression?

Veto the “loan” of €90bn (our share €3bn) to Ukraine because it has a large weapons component and we have a Constitution which forbids us from participating in a war unless there’s a Dail vote. We can minus out €1bn for weapons while handing over €2bn for “humanitarian” aid.

Bonfire of the NGOs. Let’s play a game of marry-shag-kill, either nationalise the NGO because it is a necessity, modify it so that it is a necessity and nationalise it, or just de-fund it.

Stick a €100,000 a year Garda on the Belfast-Dublin train. That will save us €20-30m each week on illegal entry costs. 3066 “arrivals” in the first three months of 2026 will cost us €374m at an average of €122,000 (estimate from Dept of Justice).
