The tourbillon was patented exactly 225 years ago.

On 26 June 1801, Abraham-Louis Breguet received the patent for his tourbillon regulator.

The rotating cage was designed to compensate for timing variations caused by gravity acting on a watch’s regulating mechanism.

Takeaway: What is now a symbol of haute horlogerie began as a serious attempt to improve mechanical timekeeping.
