I’m done with the social construct of “White.” When researching the ethnicity of a historical figure, the result came back as “White.” White is not an ethnicity (see German, French, Irish, Polish, etc., for actual ethnicities); it’s a fabricated term often used in a derogatory way. Being White is not the reason people succeed or fail, nor is it responsible for every historical atrocity. I’m tired of hearing my 13-year-old belittled by teachers for being White or being taught absurd, covetous concepts disguised as “power structures.”

Some respond to this by embracing “White Pride.” White Pride advocates are among the vilest people on the planet, matched only by violent Socialist revolutionaries and Muslim extremists who commit atrocities like throwing gay people off buildings or bombing concerts. Embracing White Power is a delusion that leads to illiberal power grabs, stifling the progress humanity should be making.

What am I to do? I will not side with the Socialists who are as dangerous as the Fascists they claim are around every corner. I will not dehumanize my neighbors because we differ politically or religiously. I will not fall into racial identities usurping the identity of "Made in the Image of God" that should transcend all ethnic/cultural differences. I will not believe the creeds or histories being constructed by those who are only capable of destruction. I am going to try to encourage the folks in my life to be better neighbors. Take pride in your ethnicity, culture, history, and traditions, and be honest about them. Every group has been involved in slavery or war and has experienced oppression—every single one. We cannot change history, and reopening old wounds only leads to regressive ideologies. I choose a better path, striving to treat each individual as worthy of the dignity they are inherently due.

I do not expect many to agree but I cannot sin against my own conscience. The dogmatic tribes formed on social media supply a moral superiority that is hard to overcome. Most people feel safer in well-defined associations, even if the definitions are false or hateful. When this bleeds into real life, there are rarely heroes, but many become villains. Choose to be a good neighbor. Choose dignity over disparagement. I am Thom Provost, a proud American, and I believe all people are made in the image of God.
