Nikola Tesla claimed that his small, pocket-sized mechanical oscillator (sometimes referred to as an "earthquake machine" or harmonic oscillator) could destroy a steel skyscraper by tuning into its resonant frequency.

According to Tesla's own accounts and contemporary reports, he demonstrated this principle in 1898 at his New York City laboratory on East Houston Street. He attached the oscillator, which was powered by compressed air, to a steel support beam, causing the vibrations to amplify until the entire building shook violently enough to alarm occupants and prompt police response.
