In two years, I went from struggling to run a 5k to running over 50 miles and finishing 13th in an ultramarathon this past weekend. What did I learn? 👇
A successful business needs three core processes:
1) Feedback - backward-looking, how do people communicate on current systems?
2) Innovation - forward-looking, what provides the opportunity for future change?
3) Training - real-time, how to get on the same page now?
What else?
One of the challenges of leadership that I’ve seen is deciding who should or can be included in particular decisions. Is it a team decision? A solo-decision? Who can offer feedback to make the decision?
The best leaders I’ve worked with seem to answer these almost intuitively.
My current naive conclusion is simply: the Other Spaces are becoming increasingly important to contribute to. Put more good out into the world when you’re in them, curate your own vibe, and contribute to the unique culture of a city.
Mental Framework for Cities: Cities are the center of civilization and have been for millennia. Jericho was inhabited in 10,000 BCE. More than ever, cities are made up of starkly different cultures. My hometown of Philadelphia feels as vibrant as ever, but feels more ‘curated’.
I’ve realized it’s the Other Spaces that give the city itself a cultural identity, not the Private Spaces. In Philly, that identity is especially gritty, full of “wooder” and rabid sports fans. It is easy to love and to hate, just ask anyone who has visited.
If you ask someone what they think about the current thing, first thing that comes out of their mouth will be parroting something they read or heard…
Ability to gather information, truly deliberate on it, synthesize it, and produce your own perspective and view is a superpower
Text shortcuts are perhaps the most underutilized iPhone life hack out there.
I use shortcuts of three consecutive letters that auto-fill different emails, email signatures, phone numbers, or phrases every single day.
@emolikememo it can detect laps and stroke for swimming which is nice. Also re:4 there is *some* context on the phone app for overall metrics but overall lagging
