Two hundred and fifty years ago, our nation’s founders took an extraordinary step, declaring that liberty and self-government were the birthright of a free people.
One of the most remarkable stories in human history emerged from that moment.
For generations, we have carried forward the enduring belief that every person possesses inherent dignity and that freedom is the ingredient needed to unlock human potential. Across our nation, countless men and women have risen from humble beginnings to lives of extraordinary achievement. Our citizens, from every walk of life, have inspired innovation, enterprise, discovery, service, and sacrifice on a scale few could have imagined.
As we celebrate our 250th anniversary, we honor those who built, defended, and strengthened this nation across the generations. The principles that animated our founding remain as vital today as they were in 1776.
May we reflect on the remarkable inheritance we share as Americans, and look with hope toward the future.

At today’s America250 Time Capsule Ceremony, we celebrated the stories, values, and milestones that define Miami-Dade County and our nation as we look ahead to America’s 250th anniversary. I am proud to serve on @MiamiDadeCounty America 250 Committee with wonderful colleagues.
Miami Dade College was proud to contribute a replica of the Freedom Tower to the time capsule, a powerful symbol of hope, freedom, opportunity, and the enduring spirit of our community. As the proud steward of this National Historic Landmark, we are honored that its legacy will be preserved for future generations.
As we commemorate this historic milestone, we celebrate the people, institutions, and ideals that continue to shape our nation’s future. We look forward to the day this time capsule is opened in 2076, connecting future generations to the history and aspirations of our community.
As the United States nears its 250th anniversary, Hoover Senior Fellow @LTGHRMcMaster features in The American Experiment, a new five-part @Netflix series on how a radical experiment in self-government gave rise to a nation. https://t.co/FZqX6DoRDs
TEACHING THE NEW LOOP. The future of the university is preparing every student to design and build the private evals and workflows that allow them to combine their expertise with AI in ways that accrue value to them, not just to the frontier models.
I've been experimenting with how to do this @StanfordGSB in my new class, "Free Systems." Here's what I learned teaching it for the first time this year:
(1) Human expertise is a pre-req to building private evals. In my class, students were able to use Claude Code + OpenRouter to design their own personal evals...but first, they had to know what they wanted to evaluate! That's where their own experience, values, and expertise came in. We're going to have to double down on non-AI teaching to get students to this place, where they can bring all of that to the AI classroom.
(2) Students need a ramp with tangible exercises. Throwing a student straight into the deepend with coding agents and evals doesn't work for many of them. Instead, we started with more structured tasks and pre-built environments before gradually removing the training wheels. This helped bring everyone along.
(3) In-person collaboration and tutoring will be a big part of these classes. Students learned a lot more by working through the projects in the same room, hearing from one another as they went, and benefitting from TAs getting them unstuck the moment anything went awry.
(4) People need a little push. A lot of people don't think they'll be able to use coding agents---but with a small nudge, they quickly realize they can use them to great effect.
I really like Satya's vision of sovereignty in the AI world. To be sovereign, each of us must be able to swap out different AI models without losing the "tacit knowledge" that allows us to offer distinct value. To do that, we must all be able to build these new loops that let us evaluate models against our personal goals and then hill-climb towards these measured aims.
My dream is that everyone is able to do this. This class was a good first experiment, but there's a lot more to do. Next year, I'm hoping to build the Free Systems class into something offered to undergrads, MBAs, and executives that puts them in the position to hold AI accountable to them personally, and to make sure that we all benefit from AI and aren't eaten whole by the frontier models.
Please let me know any and all ideas you have for these classes, and check out the full post---including the students' amazing final projects---at this link:

This project is more than a competition entry. It showcases the talent, innovation, and hands-on learning happening every day at MDC, where students gain the real-world experience that prepares them for successful careers.
Voting is open to the public, and every vote helps showcase the incredible work of MDC students on a statewide stage.
Satellite launches are rising faster than any shared system to coordinate them. A new Hoover Institution report argues the US can take the first-mover advantage on space traffic and export the standards that keep the orbital commons safe and sustainable.
