A former senior DEA official from the Obama era, Paul Campo, has been indicted on serious federal charges. Prosecutors allege that Campo, who served as Deputy Chief of the DEA’s Office of Financial Operations, conspired with an associate to launder approximately $12 million in drug proceeds for the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), one of Mexico’s most violent and notorious cartels, now designated by the U.S. as a foreign terrorist organization. According to the indictment, they also laundered about $750,000 by converting cash to cryptocurrency and facilitated a payment tied to roughly 220 kilograms of cocaine (valued at around $5 million) that they believed would be distributed in the U.S., expecting a cut of the profits. Campo retired from the DEA in 2016 after a 25-year career. The case, brought by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, highlights the cartel’s role in fueling violence and drug-related deaths on both sides of the border. Campo and his co-defendant were arrested following a sting operation involving a confidential source posing as a CJNG representative. This remains an ongoing legal matter, with the defendants facing multiple conspiracy charges including narco-terrorism, narcotics distribution, material support to a terrorist organization, and money laundering.
