@kataplexis Hannah Arendt made the argument that it wasn’t the Nazis who invented the German language, and very valid point of argument but point is the case had to be made coz the context was never neutral.
@kataplexis I’m afraid that’s a difficult argument to sustain... Greek without its context and history is well, just a combination of syntactic operations. I agree the civilization shtick is really obtuse but to divorce language and context is maybe not very productive.
There’s all kinds of stupid things I’ve learnt to live with and resigned to our cruel fate, but loud football fans in public transportation isn’t one of them. I hope they freeze in the cold 🥶
Not sure how a plastic hard hat can help you in the case of an explosion... But Avi loves making stuff up to make up little points of pseudo-propaganda.
I spent last Friday night in an Istanbul synagogue that had a yellow hard hat under each seat for fear of a car bomb.
Tonight I’m grateful to live in a place where I can celebrate my Jewish identity openly and freely.

@sauterne@rogueclassicist@manuelpm And is there NO ONE in your entire institution with basic Latin reading and undergraduate paleography training level?
I've just seen some folks on FB defending the anti-vaccine movement... And then last night, some other people comparing AOC and the white dress ladies to the KKK... Can we leave the Internet now? Where's the exit?

I guess there're not many translations into English of Guðbergur Bergsson, are there? I must also have some books of Laxness also lying around in some box unopened for a number of years in the mainland flat. Where could that be...?
@Kattullus Everything is moving here https://t.co/0Vuky98f2Y but the process is painful... I'm sure they'll deliver best possible website (at least from a tech view) but I'm also sure gonna happen overnight. Most difficult thing with Modern Greek poets is access to the actual Greek texts.
And, well, the Onassis Foundation took over the Cavafy Archives (after they bought it in 2012) which is meant to be great, and probably it is, but why they destroyed the website with the entire Cavafy poetry in English and Greek... I know not. It happened like last week.
@Kattullus That is weird, coz the site wouldn't access last night... It would direct you to the Onassis new site of the archive, and on this one you can no longer access the Greek text.
@conflictantiq and Holy Mary mother of god, another one, purportedly an Ancient Syriac gilded Bible seized in, wait for it......... Turkey....on October 31, 2015.
