They get salaries. They get tenders. They get bodyguards. They get free travel. You get load shedding, water cuts, potholes and excuses. Now bodies are falling left right and center And you’re told to be patient.

I don't need constant attention, I want intentional attention. There's a huge difference between someone being available all day and someone making sure you feel important even when life gets busy.

Key points from President Ramaphosa’s address:

President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation over the killings of women in Ekurhuleni and the wider crisis of gender-based violence and femicide.

11 women’s bodies have now been found in Ekurhuleni since July.

Ramaphosa described the killings as a national crisis and acknowledged widespread anger and fear among women.

He admitted that government’s response has not been enough, saying more must be done to prevent violence, improve policing and ensure justice.

A specialised multidisciplinary investigation has been elevated to national level, involving detectives, Crime Intelligence, forensic specialists, investigative psychologists and digital investigators.

Several arrests have already been made in individual Ekurhuleni murder cases.

Police have also identified persons of interest and are collecting DNA, blood, cellphone and other forensic evidence.

Ramaphosa said there is currently no evidence that a single perpetrator is responsible for all the Ekurhuleni killings.

All possibilities remain under investigation.

He urged the public to report missing persons immediately, stressing that there is no requirement to wait 24 hours.

Increased visible policing in Ekurhuleni will continue.

Four immediate measures announced

National case-recovery operation:
An audit of unresolved murders, attempted murders, rapes and serious sexual offences involving women and children. Within 60 days, government must identify stalled cases and within 90 days develop recovery plans with named officials and deadlines.
Forensic backlog:
Police and forensic authorities must produce a funded plan within 60 days to reduce DNA and other forensic backlogs. Priority samples involving the rape or murder of women and children will be fast-tracked, with quarterly public reporting.
Women’s safety audits:
Every municipality must identify dangerous infrastructure and locations, including broken streetlights, abandoned buildings, unsafe transport routes, overgrown areas and poorly secured parks. Urgent problems must be addressed or included in funded plans within 90 days.
Alcohol-related violence:
Government will strengthen enforcement of liquor laws and develop a coordinated legislative and enforcement package to address alcohol-related violence.

Wider GBV response

More resources are being directed to Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units.
Sexual Offences Courts and Thuthuzela Care Centres are being expanded.
DNA processing, shelters, Victim Friendly Services and GBV desks are being strengthened.
Ramaphosa stressed that policing and arrests alone cannot solve GBV and that prevention must begin in homes, schools, workplaces, communities and relationships.

He called specifically on men and boys to challenge abusive behaviour and reject violence against women.

He emphasised that responsibility always lies with the perpetrator, never the victim.

The Inter-Ministerial Committee and National Council on GBVF will issue quarterly progress reports, with the first consolidated report due within 90 days.

Ramaphosa acknowledged that the state has fallen short, announced four immediate interventions with deadlines and reporting requirements, and called for a broader societal effort to prevent GBV and femicide rather than responding only after women have been killed.

Every week we discover a bit of what made General Makhwanazi say “enough is enough” and risk his life and livelihood. Our country is a playground for criminals.

[Somashishini🌟🌟 @SomashishiniGP]

There’s a company that I used to work with, we built tech for them to identify children and women being trafficked at airports, there was a time they were making busts everyday at OR Tambo for two months straight. The government came and shut them down without any explanation.
