Cord Jefferson: "Every time I sit down and write, I’m like, ‘This is a miserable experience. Why am I doing this? What do I think I’m trying to accomplish here?’ And then as soon as I’m done, I’m like, ‘Oh, that was the best thing ever.’" #screenwriting
One more thing. Most scripts are bad, very bad. You have to write a very good one. Lack of access is a real problem but it's not THE problem. The problem is you have to be better than everyone else. 90% of your energy should go toward writing, maybe 10% for networking, etc.
When writing a pilot, please don’t withhold important character information thinking you’ll show it in ep six. Someone has to buy it first. 😂 A pilot shouldn’t tell everything but we need to know what they want, what’s in the way, flaws, antagonist so we’re down for the journey.
I consult on screenplays. More than half have the same issue - you can see it in the logline: no clear GOAL or no OBSTACLE.
No rules, sure, but stories get easier when you lock your STORY DNA: HERO. GOAL. OBSTACLE. STAKES.
Save money! Don't hire a consultant. Just fix DNA
I'll say it again: a MAD Solutions-style enterprise that operates inside Sub-Saharan African markets needs to happen – even if regionally. Just give us the funding and watch us work 😏

Judas and the Black Messiah is a film we all collectively moved on from too quickly. I blame COVID. Had this film dropped during normal times with a standard theatrical release, I think we’d discuss this more. I’m at least happy this movie received some Oscar love. Great film.
