From what I could gather after speaking with friends in Kobani. Following the protests by Kurdish youth over the brutal murder of Sipan, a huge convoy of HTS-affiliated internal security moved in to break the protests, arresting a large number of Kurdish youths.

After filling the jail cells in Kobani, the head of security, an HTS-affiliated man now in charge of Kobani’s internal security and outranking the Kurdish Asayish, decided to transfer them all to an HTS-controlled prison in Aleppo, overruling the Kurdish Asayish despite their objections.

When they attempted the transfer, a riot broke out inside the jail. It is not clear how the fire started, but once it did, the Al-Qaeda man in charge allegedly decided not to open the prison cells and let them cook. A fistfight then broke out between Kurdish police and HTS police, and weapons were drawn at each other.

When the Kurdish police finally managed to opened the cells (one died in the attempt), many Kurds had already burned to death. Others are still in critical condition. Around two dozen between dead or injured.
