Look at the numbers.
Among young American men ages 18–29, one in four uses pornography daily. Nearly one in four gambles daily. Two out of three play video games daily. And one in eight does all three…every single day.
This is not a collection of private habits. It is a system. A coordinated economy of dopamine, isolation, and delayed manhood that is quietly harvesting an entire generation.
The pattern is structural. Porn trains the eyes and the body to demand endless novelty without cost or covenant. Gambling trains the mind to chase artificial risk instead of real responsibility. Gaming trains the will to find achievement in simulated worlds while the actual world of work, marriage, and fatherhood waits. Together they form a closed loop that keeps young men stimulated, distracted, and spiritually offline.
Scripture has always named this spirit. It is the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life; now delivered at industrial scale through a phone. The Word does not treat these things as neutral entertainment. It treats them as competing masters. “You cannot serve God and…” the algorithm.
The modern age has perfected a new form of captivity that requires no chains. It only requires continuous stimulation and the slow erosion of desire for anything higher. A man discipled by these three rarely has the surplus strength left for prayer, for a wife, for children, or for the hard work of becoming dangerous for the Kingdom.
Yet the same Word that diagnoses the captivity also announces the only real exit. Jesus did not come to offer better time-management tips. He came to set captives free. The fruit of the Spirit is self-control. The call of the gospel is to take up a cross, not a controller. The path of discipleship still leads a man out of the endless feed and into a life that actually costs something; and therefore actually matters.
This generation of young men is not primarily lacking information. It is lacking a better Master. The addiction economy will keep offering more of the same. Look at the numbers.
Among young American men ages 18–29, one in four uses pornography daily. Nearly one in four gambles daily. Two out of three play video games daily. And one in eight does all three…every single day.
This is not a collection of private habits. It is a system. A coordinated economy of dopamine, isolation, and delayed manhood that is quietly harvesting an entire generation.
The pattern is structural. Porn trains the eyes and the body to demand endless novelty without cost or covenant. Gambling trains the mind to chase artificial risk instead of real responsibility. Gaming trains the will to find achievement in simulated worlds while the actual world of work, marriage, and fatherhood waits. Together they form a closed loop that keeps young men stimulated, distracted, and spiritually offline.
Scripture has always named this spirit. It is the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life; now delivered at industrial scale through a phone. The Word does not treat these things as neutral entertainment. It treats them as competing masters. “You cannot serve God and…” the algorithm.
The modern age has perfected a new form of captivity that requires no chains. It only requires continuous stimulation and the slow erosion of desire for anything higher. A man discipled by these three rarely has the surplus strength left for prayer, for a wife, for children, or for the hard work of becoming dangerous for the Kingdom.
Yet the same Word that diagnoses the captivity also announces the only real exit. Jesus did not come to offer better time-management tips. He came to set captives free. The fruit of the Spirit is self-control. The call of the gospel is to take up a cross, not a controller. The path of discipleship still leads a man out of the endless feed and into a life that actually costs something; and therefore actually matters.
This generation of young men is not primarily lacking information. It is lacking a better Master. The addiction economy will keep offering more of the same.
