We also found that Sabiá’s spike shows pH-dependent receptor binding—unlike other genetically close arenaviruses.
This suggests a potential need for a secondary intracellular receptor, and a more elaborate entry mechanism than previously known.

The HERV-K spike has a role during embryonic development and is associated with various diseases like cancer, ALS, and viral infections, making it an interesting and promising drug target. Having this structure may enable the development of novel therapeutics.

בראש הוועדה עמד עמי אפלבום שהיה עד לאחרונה המדען הראשי. היו עוד שני חברים. הם וידאו שאף אחד מהפיינליסטים לא ינצל את המעמד לפוליטיקה.
כשנודע לשר החינוך על הבחירה, הוא ניסה לשנותה. הופעלו לחצים. שכנועים. הועלה של של מדענית אלטרנטיבית. חברי הוועדה סירבו. אז הקטגוריה כולה בוטלה. ואחר כך כל האחרות.
