Real men are accountable for their actions, acknowledge their mistakes, apologize, and try to set things right. I met some real men recently, members of my home ward I want to tell you about.

Recently, my wife Ruth substituted as a teacher in a youth Sunday School class. The students were 12- and 13-year-old young men and young women. Some of the young men were acting like, well, 12- and 13-year-old young men. They were a bit casual and less than engaged than ideal in the lesson about Job. Ruth had given the students a handout with some scriptures to read. Of course, paper airplanes were made of the handouts (is anyone surprised?). Ruth who is an excellent and adaptable teacher collected the airplanes, continued with the lesson, and thought no more about it.

On the following Thursday evening, we had a knock on our door. Three of the young men were on the porch. They handed Ruth a letter that read:

Dear Sister Renlund,

We want to apologize for our behavior in Sunday School. We meant no disrespect even though our actions said otherwise. We failed to meet our duty as Deacons and we are sorry. We have learned from our mistake and better learned what our Aaronic Priesthood duty is.

We have made a bouquet of paper airplanes for you to show our appreciation for teaching our class and for helping us learn our duty better. Thank you for what you do for the Church.

PRESIDENT NELSON LEFT PRESIDENT OAKS A FINAL CHALLENGE… IS IT BEHIND THESE SUNDAY CHANGES?

The Church’s new Sunday schedule goes into effect September 6—and after studying the newest training videos, I don’t think this is really about 25-minute classes.

The official implementation guide says:

“This is more than a schedule change.”

That becomes even more interesting when we remember President Oaks’s account of visiting President Nelson just two days before his death:

“We expressed our love for him and gave him assurances that we were carrying on with the decisions he had made.”

President Oaks later added:

“We have much work to do to fulfill the challenges he has given us. And there is more yet to come.”

So are we watching part of that work unfold now?

The newest training points toward something deeper: members studying and receiving revelation throughout the week, then gathering with something to bring.

And that takes us back to the sacrament promise:

“that they may always have his Spirit to be with them.”

Always.

Not just while we sit in Church.

That’s why I increasingly think these aren’t really class changes.

They are SACRAMENT changes—part of an effort to create Saints who live in closer communion with Jesus Christ throughout the entire week.

And contrary to theories that “home-centered” worship would eventually mean meeting together less, the Church is now doing the opposite: Sunday School, Relief Society and elders quorum will all meet every week.

The home is becoming stronger.

The gathering of the Saints is becoming stronger.

And President Nelson warned that in coming days we would not be able to survive spiritually without the constant influence of the Holy Ghost.

President Oaks has repeated that warning.

I believe the Lord is preparing a stronger covenant people—more capable of receiving revelation, strengthening one another, and preparing for the return of Jesus Christ.

And President Oaks has already told us:

“There is more yet to come.”

The fundamental purposes for the exercise of moral agency are to choose God and to love one another. And these two purposes align precisely with the first and second great commandments to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind and to love our neighbor as ourselves.

Earlier this week, Susan and I were delighted to visit with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and representatives from a collaborating organization in Tokyo, Japan as they participated in a service project to provide relief supplies for refugees and single-parent families.

As disciples of Jesus Christ, it is our wonderful responsibility to seek opportunities to serve and bless God’s children. As we do so, we will be blessed to become instruments in the Lord’s hands to help others feel His love, light, and promised peace.
