Duncan Ross says you don’t need to be a pro to explore shipwrecks.

Underwater archaeologist and author Duncan Ross makes a simple case: you don’t need a degree to help uncover maritime history. In his 2025 book Discovering Submerged Stories: A Personal Dive into Britain’s History, Ross champions “citizen archaeology” and shows how everyday enthusiasts can contribute in meaningful ways.

Join the Nautical Archaeology Society (NAS)
Ross recommends starting with NAS introductory courses to learn basic survey techniques and ethical practices, which provide a structured pathway for amateurs to participate in official projects.

Explore Accessible and Diverse Sites
He suggests looking beyond deep-sea shipwrecks to shallow-water sites, such as rivers, lochs, and submerged forests, which are often more accessible to divers of all skill levels.

Combine Diving with Archival Research
Ross advises spending time in libraries and archives to uncover the personal stories of the crews and the historical context of a site before and after you dive.

Volunteer with Heritage Organizations
He emphasizes contributing to the field by collaborating with professional bodies like the Maritime Archaeology Trust, providing essential data and volunteer labor for protected sites.

Document and Share Your Findings
Ross encourages enthusiasts to photograph or illustrate their discoveries and share those stories through dive magazines to promote the preservation of maritime heritage.

The heart of the work, Ross says, is curiosity and care: research the stories, document what you see, and collaborate responsibly. A lot of human history is still down there—and it’s more accessible than most people realize.
