I could list countless occasions when South Africans desperately needed this level of police and military intervention.

When women’s bodies were discovered in Kempton Park, when zama zamas terrorised communities, when residents of Westbury and Eldorado Park pleaded for protection from gang violence, when communities in the Cape Flats were caught in deadly gang wars, when construction mafias threatened workers and businesses, when extortion syndicates targeted spaza shops and schools, when women and children were raped and murdered and when communities lived in fear of armed criminals, where was this level of urgency?

Yet when violent clashes erupt between locals and foreign nationals, soldiers are swiftly deployed.

The question is why ordinary South Africans cannot expect the same urgency, resources and protection when their own communities are under siege.
