Free State police have arrested two suspected cash-in-transit (CIT) robbers and recovered stolen money within three hours of a robbery in Welkom.
The robbery took place at cash and carry in Welkom on Saturday afternoon while security officers were collecting cash.
Six armed suspects allegedly overpowered the guards, forced them to open the cash van, and fled with an undisclosed amount of money, three firearms, bulletproof vests and a hand radio.
Following the robbery, Crime Intelligence, Tactical Response Team (TRT) and Public Order Policing (POP) members tracked the suspects to a house in Welkom.
A shootout broke out when police arrived, resulting in the arrest of two known CIT robbery suspects, while others escaped.
Police recovered some of the stolen money and items linked to the robbery.
The arrested suspects are expected to appear in court on charges including armed robbery, attempted murder and possession of suspected stolen property.
Free State Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Solomon Lesia praised the intelligence-driven operation and said police are continuing the hunt for the remaining suspects.
