A couple months ago the NFL betting season seemed a long way away. But suddenly, it’s here!

This new NFL season kicks off Wednesday night with a Super Bowl rematch between the champion Seahawks and Patriots in Seattle (8:20 ET, NBC).

Let’s hope this game is a little more interesting than the last time these teams met.

The Seahawks beat New England in Super Bowl 60 last February 29-13. That game was 12-0 through three quarters as the Patriots could get nothing going offensively against that Seattle defense. The teams eventually combined for 666 yards of total offense but half that came in garbage time. And the game played under a total of 45.5.

Also, the Seahawks out-rushed New England that day 141-79 and won the turnover battle 3-0.

As of early Wednesday morning the line on this game sits at Seattle -3 at some outlets, -3.5 at others, with an over/under of 44.5.

Seattle lost Super Bowl MVP running back Kenneth Walker to free-agency (Kansas City) over the off-season so Notre Dame rookie Jadarian Price is the No. 1 man on the depth chart heading into Wednesday night.

Both teams begin this season playing against a wins over/under of 10.5.

Diz’s take: Last February’s Super Bowl played out kinda ugly and there’s not much reason to expect much different Wednesday night. Seattle was favored by -5.5 last February and it’s still the better team. I’m not exactly going out on a limb here but I like the Seahawks minus the points and the under.

Bettin’ Football - NFL Exhibition Week 3

I don’t bet NFL exhibition football. But for those who do here’s how the first two weeks of pre-season betting played out.

- Last week underdogs won nine of 16 games outright and played 10-5-1 against the spread.
- So through the first two weeks of this NFL pre-season underdogs are 17-15-1 SU, 22-10-1 ATS.
- Last week’s over/unders split 8-8 as games averaged 37.2 points per.
- So unders are 20-13 this NFL exhibition season, as games averaged 36.3 points against an average o/u of 38.

Take from that what you will.

Week 3 of this NFL pre-season kicks off with four games tonight, including Chargers -3.5 v. Rams at SoFi (10 ET, NFL). Then ten games Friday, including Giants -3 v. Jets (7:30 ET) and Seahawks -2.5 at Chiefs (8 ET, ESPN). Then two games Saturday, starting with Colts -3.5 v. Lions (1 ET, NFL).

- Average o/u this week - 36 - two points lower than Weeks 1 and 2.

The teams then get next weekend off - the real action begins Wed., Sept. 9, with a Super Bowl rematch between the Seahawks (-3.5) and Patriots in Seattle.

After looking at the results from Week 1 exhibition play I guessed on the favorites and the overs last week. I hope nobody listened too closely.

As for Week 3 my advice on betting NFL pre-season remains - watch, but don’t touch.

Wednesday’s MLB Betting Tips and Free Picks

Full slate today, including a handful of afternooners, beginning with a rubber match between the Rays and Tigers in Detroit (1:10 ET, MLB). Also, the Cubs and D’Backs play a rubber match in Arizona (3:40 ET, ESPN); Sonny Gray goes for win No. 17 at Miami (6:40 ET, MLB); the Astros and Yankees go again in the Bronx (7:05 ET, ESPN); and the Dodgers and Braves go again in Atlanta (7:15 ET, MLB).

Grand Salami - not posted yet - sum of totals - 125 - I only see a couple maybe three “ace”- level starters going today. But more games at pitcher-friendly parks, including Seattle and San Diego, than hitter-friendly. However, you never know what might happen at those games at Sacramento (90+ degrees there today).

- Streakers - Royals nine wins in a row; Cleveland 6 in a row; Red Sox five in a row - sounds like a 3-teamer
- Cubs and D’Backs both top 5 line-ups v. LHP; perhaps a play on the 5-inning over
- Boston 18-5 Gray’s last 23 starts
- Brewers 2-14 w/RISP last night; I expect better tonight

Full schedule, starting with Red Sox-Marlins down in Miami (6:40 ET, MLB). Then it’s the first of three between the Astros and Yankees in the Bronx (7:05 ET, MLB); the first of three between the Dodgers and Braves in Atlanta (7:15 ET, TBS); and King v. Skenes out in San Diego (9:40 ET, ESPN).

Grand Salami - 128.5 (8.6 rpg) - Wind in at Detroit and on the South Side, out at Yankee Stadium, City Field and Oracle Park. I only see four or so “aces” going tonight but more games at pitcher-friendly parks - Seattle, San Diego - than hitter-friendly. However, those games at Sacramento can throw the whole Salami up for grabs (15 runs last night, o/u tonight - 10.5).

- Boston 7-1 Tolle’s last eight starts; also, my No. 1-ranked bullpen

Ten games to play with today, beginning with Alcantara v. Suarez down in Miami (6:40 ET, MLB). Also, Tampa’s Rasmussen goes for W number 14 at Detroit (6:40 ET, FS1); Gausman makes fourth start for Cubs at Arizona (9:40 ET, MLB); Gilbert goes against Wheeler in Seattle (9:10 ET, MLB); Ray v. Ashcraft in San Diego (9:40 ET, MLB); and Cincy’s Burns goes for win No. 15 at San Francisco (9:45 ET, FS1).

Grand Salami - 85.5 (8.5 rpg) - I see a good half-dozen or so “aces” going in just 10 games. Wind out at Detroit and Angel Stadium but more games at pitcher-friendly parks - Seattle, San Diego - than hitter-friendly. However, those games at Sacramento can get crazy (o/u tonight - 11).

Full Sunday menu, beginning with Christopher Sanchez’s attempt at win No. 17 when the Phillies host the Cardinals (1:35 ET, MLB). Also, the Jays, 3-0 with Soriano, play a rubber match with the Yanks in the Bronx (1:35 ET, ESPN); the White Sox go against Nolan McLean and the Mets (2:10 ET, MLB); the Mariners shoot for a sweep of the Cubs in Seattle (4:10 ET, MLB); and the Braves and Brewers put a cap on the weekend with a Sunday nighter in Milwaukee (7 ET, ESPN).

Grand Salami - 134.5 (9.0 rpg) - I see about four “aces” going, which is probably below average on a 15-game slate. But more games at pitcher-friendly parks, like in Seattle and San Diego, than hitter-friendly.
