JUST IN: PAGASA announces the onset of El Niño, which is likely to persist until early 2027.
"DOST-PAGASA reports that El Niño conditions are now present in the tropical Pacific as observed relative sea surface temperature anomaly (rSSTA) reached the +0.5°C threshold," the weather bureau says. | via @josiahvantonio
BREAKING: @dost_pagasa declares the presence of El Niño conditions in the equatorial Pacific Ocean, as the observed relative sea surface temperature anomaly (rSSTA) reached the +0.5°C threshold last month.
Here are the possible impacts of El Niño in the Philippines:
• Above-average rainfall in the western section of Luzon — under the Type I climate — during the rainy season (June to September). ⛈️
• Below-average tropical cyclone frequency; but stronger could reach super typhoons. 🌀
• Below-normal rainfall during the dry months (October onwards). 🌤️
• Weakening of the Northeast Monsoon (Amihan) due to the disruption of the trade winds. 💨
• Above-average air temperatures. 🌡️
• Extended dry season; may lead to dry spell and drought.

OUR FLAG SAVED A LOT OF LEARNERS TODAY 🇵🇭
#YouScoop

BREAKING: @phivolcs_dost upgraded the scale of the earthquake in Mindanao this Monday morning to Magnitude 7.8 — becoming the largest earthquake in the Philippines of the 21st century, surpassing the M7.6 earthquakes of 2012 in Eastern Visayas and 2023 in the eastern Mindanao.
It now also ties for the fourth-largest earthquake in the country since the beginning of reliable records. The other earthquakes with the same magnitude occurred during the 1911 Mindanao earthquake, 1948 Panay earthquake, and the infamous 1990 Luzon earthquake.
Aftershocks are expected. Stay safe! ⚠️

NOAA could possibly declare the start of El Niño later this month or next month, due to the continuosly increasing sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) in the equatorial Pacific Ocean.
Based on the latest Euro model, the upcoming 2026-27 El Niño event may reach above 3°C at peak — surpassing the 1982-83, 1997-98, and 2014-16 events as the strongest in recorded history! ⚠️
Here are the potential impacts of El Niño in the Philippines:
• Above-average rainfall in the western section of Luzon — under the Type I climate — during the rainy season (June to September). ⛈️
• Below-average tropical cyclone frequency; but stronger — could reach super typhoons. 🌀
• Below-normal rainfall during the dry months (October onwards). 🌤️

SENATE BACK TO WORK FOR THE FILIPINO PEOPLE
We express our deep appreciation and commend the courageous decision of Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero to take the floor today and confront the issues facing the institution. His action sent a clear message: that his commitment to the country, to the Senate, and to the Constitution would prevail above all else.
His presence enabled the Senate to proceed with the discussion of matters that are too important to be left unresolved and too consequential to be set aside.
On the issue of quorum, this is not an uncharted matter. The Supreme Court, in Avelino v. Cuenco, recognized the principle that a quorum of 12 is determined based on the number of members who are legally able to discharge the functions of the Senate.
There is likewise an institutional precedent. In 2015, the Senate recognized a quorum of 12 senators who were within its jurisdiction. The Senate continued to perform its constitutional duties because the work of government could not be placed on hold.
At a time when the nation faces pressing challenges, the Filipino people expect their Senate to work, deliberate, and fulfill its constitutional mandate. The institution cannot remain stalled by disagreements or uncertainty. Our duty is clear: to legislate, provide oversight, and serve the public interest.
The Filipino people deserve a Senate that shows up, does its job, and places public service above politics.
It is time for the Senate to move forward and get back to work for the Filipino people.
