It was a pleasure to welcome my friend, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, back to Damascus for a very successful visit.

A particularly important moment was the reopening of the Danish Embassy in Damascus, making Denmark the first Scandinavian country to reopen its embassy in Syria after 14 years. This is a significant step in our growing relationship and a welcome sign of Syria’s renewed engagement with its European partners.

Today, we had productive discussions and agreed on a number of important steps to strengthen relations between our two countries, including beginning work towards a comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement between Syria and Denmark, spanning across multiple sectors including but not limited to agriculture, energy, aviation, investment and migration.

I also expressed our appreciation for Denmark’s support for Syria’s recovery and reconstruction, and for its understanding of how important rebuilding the country is to Syria’s stability and future.

I thank Minister Rasmussen and Denmark for their friendship and support. We look forward to building on this visit and taking our relationship further in the months and years ahead.

I was pleased to join my friend, Denmark’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Lars Løkke Rasmussen, at the opening of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Denmark in Syria. This is an important step in Syria’s re-engagement with the international community, strengthening its diplomatic presence and deepening its engagement with its European partners.

The return of diplomatic missions to Damascus sends a clear message that Syria is entering a new chapter in its international relations, one built on dialogue, cooperation, and shared interests.
