#Genocost2026 As we enter the last week before the Congolese Genocide Memorial Day, I reflect on my last week's visit to Amsterdam to the National Holocaust Names Memorial, where thousands of Jews, Roma and Sinti victims lost their lives. I spent an hour in the memorial park thinking of the 7 million victims of the Congolese genocide yet to be recognised. In the Netherlands, Dr. Debora Kayembe pays tribute to the victims of the Holocaust

As part of a private stay in the Netherlands, Dr. Debora Kayembe, an internationally renowned lawyer, human rights advocate, and Honorary Rector of the University of Edinburgh, visited the National Holocaust Memorial in Amsterdam, a major site of remembrance dedicated to the victims of the Shoah.

Through these images, we discover a place of memory where each brick bears the name of a victim, their date of birth, as well as their age at the time of their death. It stands as a testimony to the scale of this human tragedy, in which the victims were between 4 and 97 years old.

Some striking details also draw attention: certain bricks still bear no inscription, as families continue to add the names of their lost loved ones who have not yet been included.
It is a true work of remembrance and respect for every victim, ensuring that no one is forgotten.

This visit also recalls Dr. Debora Kayembe’s longstanding advocacy before international institutions for the recognition of the Congolese Genocide, justice for victims, the preservation of their memory, and reparations.

Her commitment has once again earned her the role of patron of the Genocost campaign this year, a responsibility she had already undertaken in 2024.

As patron of the 2026 edition of the GENOCOST campaign, Dr. Debora Kayembe will deliver a speech during the 13th GENOCOST Commemoration Ceremony, which will be held in London on August 2, under the theme: “Justice, Memory and Dignity.”

Her address will be part of the continuation of her commitment to the recognition of the Congolese Genocide, justice for victims, and the duty of remembrance.

Message from Dr. Debora Kayembe, Patron of the Genocost 2026 Campaign, on the Occasion of the Commemoration of Genocost.

My name is Debora Kayembe, a lawyer and political activist. I am honoured to be this year’s patron of the GENOCOST campaign, initiated in 2012 by CAYP — Congolese Action Youth Platform — and to represent this mobilisation in London, alongside those in more than twenty-five cities around the world who refuse to forget.

On the theme of JUSTICE, MEMORY, and DIGNITY.GENOCOST.

The contraction of 'genocide' and 'cost'. What the Democratic Republic of Congo has endured over the last thirty years is not just a typical conflict, but a genocide motivated by economic motives.

Six million deaths since 1996.
Seven million displaced persons.

More than one hundred eighty territories are occupied by militias supported by Rwanda and Uganda, precisely the areas richest in resources.

Six hundred and seventeen massacres were documented by the United Nations Mapping Report as early as 2010.

Thirty-eight thousand cases of sexual violence were officially reported.

Forty-eight rapes per hour during active conflict. And meanwhile: seventy per cent of the world's cobalt continues to be extracted from the Congolese underground.

Twenty-four trillion dollars of natural resources.

Behind every phone, every computer, every electric vehicle, there is blood.

For twenty years, I have dedicated my career to serving refugees, asylum seekers, and victims of war crimes. I have collaborated with the International Criminal Court.

And I tell you with the same conviction: what has been documented by the Mapping Report since 2010 can no longer go unpunished.

This requirement is not isolated.

In 2025, a memorandum co-authored with the International League of Congolese Women's Rights, signed by more than seventy associations, was handed over to Congolese institutions, the European Parliament, and the United Nations.

He carries the voice of a united Congolese civil society and diaspora, of feminist associations, anti-racist collectives, Pan-African organisations, trade unions, and so many friends of Congo who refuse to remain silent.

We request :
• The official recognition of GENOCOST.
• The creation of an International Criminal Tribunal for the DRC, like those that existed for Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia.
• Justice and reparations for the victims.
• Mandatory traceability of minerals for multinationals.
• The construction of memorial sites dedicated to the victims of GENOCOST.

August 2nd marks the beginning of the Second Congo War.

That day, we gathered in London, Paris, Kinshasa, and in more than twenty-five cities around the world, united by a common front: Congolese civil society, the diaspora, and all friends of Congo who refuse to look away.

No wealth is worth a human life. No peace without justice. No justice without truth. No truth without memory.
