Happy Haitian Flag Day! 🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹
Today, May 18, 2025, marks the 222nd anniversary of the Haitian Flag, a symbol not just of freedom but also of unyielding spirit and collective strength.
L’Union fait la Force “With Unity, There is Strength.”
This is more than a motto; it is the heartbeat of our nation.
In May 1803, at the Congress of Arcahaie, diverse leaders from formerly enslaved heroes like Jean-Jacques Dessalines to free men of color like Alexandre Pétion united to forge a path to liberation. Their courage toppled the chains of oppression, igniting the only successful slave revolution in history and birthing the world’s first Black republic.
Dessalines’ bold act of tearing the white from the French flag was a declaration: the days of colonization and division were over. Catherine Flon’s hands sewed together the red and blue, binding a people’s hope, resilience, and promise into a single banner.
On January 1, 1804, Haiti rose as a beacon of freedom and self-determination in a world that did not believe it possible.
Today, as we raise the flag high, we do more than remember history. We embrace a future that belongs to all of us, to you, to me, to every Haitian at home and across the diaspora. Haiti is a living, breathing testament to what unity, perseverance, and love can accomplish.
This country is our shared legacy, our shared responsibility, and our shared hope. Together, through our faith, courage, and unwavering commitment, we will reshape Haiti not as a distant dream but a thriving reality.
Haiti’s future has to be bright because it belongs to all of us.
