릭 호이트는 뇌성마비 사지마비로 태어나 평생 혼자 걷지도, 말하지도 못했다.

1977년, 릭은 아버지 딕에게 부탁했다. 학교 친구인 라크로스 선수가 사고로 하반신이 마비됐는데, 그를 돕는 자선 달리기에 함께 나가고 싶다고.

달리기라곤 해본 적 없던 36살의 딕은 아들을 휠체어에 태우고 출발선에 섰다. 결과는 꼴찌에서 두 번째.

레이스가 끝나고 릭이 처음으로 자유를 느꼈다고 말했다.

그날 이후 딕은 단 한 번도 멈추지 않았다.

수영할 땐 아들을 보트에 태워 끌었고, 자전거는 특수 제작 탠덤 바이크로 함께 달렸다. 1992년엔 ���국 횡단 6,011km를 45일 만에 완주했다.

딕은 2021년 80세로 세상을 떠났고, 2년 뒤 아들 릭도 61세의 나이로 생을 마감했다.
