What can community media learn from a television project in Nigeria? How do trust, storytelling and face-to-face conversations help people tell stories that matter, and what happens when media starts with people rather than processes? @DocMediaCentre

June 12 remains a powerful symbol of Nigeria’s fight for democracy, justice, and the will of the people. More than three decades after the historic 1993 election, its legacy continues to shape the nation’s democratic journey.

Another strong conversation at the Community Media Café this morning, which takes place every Thursday at Bishop Street Chapel Café, 10.30am–12pm.
This week’s discussion moved across a practical and encouraging range of topics. We talked about the purchase and use of new audio recording equipment, the setting up of YouTube channels, and the use of music as a form of ‘mixtape’ in memory sessions for people with dementia.
What stood out was the tone of the conversation. It was supportive, practical and focused on fixing problems. People were sharing what they know, asking useful questions, and thinking through the next steps without making things more complicated than they need to be.
This is what community media development often looks like in practice. It is not always about large plans or formal structures. It is often about people sitting together, listening carefully, solving immediate problems, and helping one another to build confidence with the tools, platforms and ideas that are available.
As the café grows, the network around it will grow as well. That means more shared knowledge, more practical support, and more opportunities for collaboration between people who care about local and community media.
What could become possible if more people had a regular place to ask questions, test ideas, and find support for the media projects they want to develop?
Heading to this book launch tomorrow with @s24television I’m producing a new programme that we’ve been recording interviews for the last 2 weeks called ‘Sahel Watch’. Attendance at these type of events will be a regular feature for my colleagues, and myself whenever in Nigeria
