Maharaja Hari Singh succeeded his uncle Pratap Singh in 1925 and ruled until the end of the Dogra monarchy. In 1931 protests in Srinagar, sparked by the arrest of Abdul Qadeer and police firing outside the Central Jail on 13 July, spread across the Valley and into Jammu. The unrest led the Maharaja to appoint the Glancy Commission. Its recommendations on employment, education and political rights opened the way for limited constitutional change.
In 1934 the state established the Praja Sabha, a legislative assembly of seventy-five members of whom thirty-three were elected. The body introduced a representative element, yet the Maharaja retained final authority and the elected members remained a minority. The Praja Sabha marked the first formal step toward participatory government under Dogra rule, even if its powers were restricted.
In 1947 the end of British paramountcy left the princely states free to join either dominion or remain independent. Hari Singh initially sought time. On 22 October armed tribal groups entered the state through Muzaffarabad. Facing the advance, the Maharaja appealed to India for military help. On 26 October 1947 he signed the Instrument of Accession, ceding defence, external affairs and communications to the Dominion of India while retaining authority in all other matters. Lord Mountbatten accepted the instrument the following day. Indian troops were then flown into Srinagar.

The volunteers of the All India Rajput Ekta Manch have held their ground near the statue of Maharaja Hari Singh, raising a clear and legitimate demand—the restoration of the Dogra Certificate

This is not a mere document; it is a recognition of identity, a bridge to opportunities in the armed and paramilitary forces, and an acknowledgement of the martial tradition that has long defined the sons and daughters of the Duggar land.

In a moment of genuine solidarity, members of the Jammu State People’s Movement (#JSPM) have joined this peaceful and principled protest. Col Ajay K Raina, @ajaykraina along with Vir Aditya and this writer, stand in support of this authentic struggle. In a new outfit T- Shirt, JSPM members too have raised their voices, proving that the distance of oceans cannot dilute the bond of shared heritage. Their presence, alongside the Rajput Sabha, has drawn renewed attention to a demand that belongs to the entire Dogra community.
The #DograCertificate was never a privilege of one organisation or individual. It reflected the historical contribution of #Dogra youth to the nation’s security. Its discontinuation created an avoidable injustice that continues to affect young aspirants.

The dharna, therefore, is not an act of confrontation but a dignified assertion of rights through democratic means.
As the banners of “Jai Bhavani, Jai Rajputana” flutter beside the JSPM emblem, a larger message emerges: the people of Jammu are capable of rising above organisational differences when the core of their identity is at stake. The movement for a separate Jammu State within the Union of India draws strength from such moments of unity. When voices that have long felt unheard begin to speak together, they are inevitably noticed.
The Tawi has seen empires rise and fall. It now carries the quiet resolve of those who seek only what is just. In this steadfast gathering of hearts, the Dogra spirit finds its voice once more.

📜 THE HISTORY & HIDDEN FACTS-
The word Karwa refers to an earthen pot used in traditional rituals, while Chauth means the fourth day of the lunar fortnight. The festival falls on Krishna Paksha Chaturthi during the Hindu month of Kartik.
Historically, the festival’s customs have been associated with married women’s prayers for their husbands’ longevity and well-being. Some traditions also connect it with the emotional bonds between women, particularly when families lived far from their parental homes.

🌕 THE LEGEND: LOVE THAT DEFIED DEATH
One of the most popular stories tells of Veeravati, a devoted wife who observed Karwa Chauth. Unable to bear her hunger, her brothers tricked her into believing the Moon had risen by creating an imitation of moonlight. She broke her fast prematurely. According to the legend, tragedy followed, and through sincere devotion and perseverance, she ultimately regained her husband’s well-being.
The story symbolises PATIENCE, FAITH AND THE POWER OF LOVE—although versions of this folklore differ across regions.
