110 years ago today, the Battle of the Somme began.

At 7:30am on 1 July 1916, thousands of British soldiers climbed from their trenches and advanced into history.

By the end of that first day:

57,470 British casualties

19,240 killed

Many were just teenagers. Ordinary men from towns and villages across Britain who answered their country's call, never knowing they would never return home.

The Battle of the Somme would continue for 141 days, claiming more than one million casualties on all sides. Its legacy is one of unimaginable sacrifice, courage and loss.

Today, we don't glorify war. We remember those who endured it, those who never came home, and the families whose lives were changed forever.
