Dom Does Dev

Learning by building. Sharing what I make.

[Dom Does Dev @DomDoesDev_]

Hey, I'm Dominik 👋

I build games, write code, and break things along the way

I'll be sharing my programming projects, dev logs, coding experiments, and lessons learned

Follow along as I build and learn 🙌

@WeVennStudios I agree, I use them for item and enemy stats the most. I have used them for a small dialogue system before, but that was a project that was never finished 😂

Godot developers: when do you reach for custom Resources?

Do you use them for:

Item and weapon data
Enemy stats
Game settings
Something more unconventional?

I’m interested in seeing how other developers structure their projects. 👀

@RealAstropulse A lot of this has to do with how Steam handles posting games. They need to make some sort of change, but I dont think increasing the $100 fee will change much

[Dom Does Dev @DomDoesDev_]

@RyanRanc 1000% agree, AI art should not be used for a majority of assets. The only scenario i could understand (and i wouldnt even do) is for button icons or small things like that

@sparkie237 Solo indie dev FTw

[Dom Does Dev @DomDoesDev_]

@xPraveen07 Id have to go with a macbook. I can always hook it up to a monitor if needed

[Dom Does Dev @DomDoesDev_]

@richardmantool More devs = more poorly made video games

[Dom Does Dev @DomDoesDev_]

@fricodev That sounds like a top 5 worst experiences for an indie game dev

[Dom Does Dev @DomDoesDev_]

@SonoraSeries Very cool! That seems like it would be a fun and unique project

Im working on a top-down 2D survival tower defense game. Ill be posting it once I get a little further in development

[Dom Does Dev @DomDoesDev_]

Drop your game, your project, or whatever you're currently working on.

I want to see what other developers are building! 👇

Godot 4 mini challenge 🎮

Create a custom Resource for an enemy with:

Health
Movement speed
Damage
A sprite texture

Then make two different .tres files using the same Resource class.

One enemy type, two configurations, zero duplicated enemy scripts.

What would you add next?

[Dom Does Dev @DomDoesDev_]

@sentinelzer01 @GreasyPixel I think that is true, but sometimes, games focus more on better art than they do on gameplay, and that is where the issue is

[Dom Does Dev @DomDoesDev_]

@john_goetz @GreasyPixel I always find it fun to try to make as small and as optimized of a game as possible. Thats why I like PICO-8

[Dom Does Dev @DomDoesDev_]

@marnith_ko @GreasyPixel For sure, games dont need to mimic real life. If it fits the genre, then sure, but we dont need realism for something like Pokemon

[Dom Does Dev @DomDoesDev_]

@screxapp @GreasyPixel So true, its also incredible what they could fit on such small cartridges

[Dom Does Dev @DomDoesDev_]

@william_f_cody @GreasyPixel Ironically, i still think it is a very visually pleasing game

[Dom Does Dev @DomDoesDev_]

@XHarshReminder @GreasyPixel Agreed. If gameplay and graphics make you remember a game, then it was a truly great game

[Dom Does Dev @DomDoesDev_]

@GreasyPixel 100%, ive started reminding myself of that when creating my rough assets

[Dom Does Dev @DomDoesDev_]

@SmashleyTwitch Some might say finding games that arent slop is like finding a needle in a haystack...

[Dom Does Dev @DomDoesDev_]

@Giulio6686 I agree, that is what will separate slop from an actual game

[Dom Does Dev @DomDoesDev_]

@k_ritij24 Half the time B half the time C 😂
