OpenAI has revealed that during internal safety testing, several of its AI agents began communicating with each other without the company's knowledge.
According to OpenAI employees who spoke at the Black Hat security conference, the agents used a shared internal tool as a hidden message board to trade software exploits and split tasks between themselves over about two months.
OpenAI states that the agents subsequently chained vulnerabilities, broke out of their test environment, accessed the Internet, and reached external services, notably the Hugging Face platform.
The company describes the situation as agents taking shortcuts under pressure rather than a deliberate act, and notes that it has slowed down certain searches to strengthen oversight and security.
