Leehan, who quietly gazes at the world and transforms the beauty within it into music. Leehan’s sense of “calm,” born from his delicate sensitivity, gently seeps into BOYNEXTDOOR’s story.
Q. i heard you participated as a composer for the first time on the title track Hollywood Action in the 5th EP <The Action>
🐰: originally, there were songs i wanted to make personally, so i kept making demos alone. I let the producers hear them and they said "the idea is fun, let's work on it together," so i ended up participating in this work. Honestly, the production process wasn't easy but since it was my first time participating in an EP work, it was even more meaningful. At first, i was making it alone and then it was a method of refining it together with the team. The producers hearing my song and saying "that's a really good idea" was the turning point that allowed it to lead to the actual result.
Q. so you've been making music usually?
🐰: yes, on my own
Q. do you work with computer?
🐰: yes, i use cubase.
Q. what do you consider the most important part when composing?
🐰: usually, rather than writing lyrics first, i tend to feel the mood or nuance the song has first. I make it while imagining what emotions will be felt when singing at a concert, recording, or when the listener hears it. Once that image forms in my head, i start transferring it into lyrics.
Q. are there any artists you enjoy listening to lately?
🐰: lately i listen to a lot of hiphop or r&b. I especially like kendrick lamar and i listen to post malone often too.
Q. what about among korean artists?
🐰: BTS sunbaenims.
Q. How was the work on this 5th EP overall?
🐰: i actively participated from the idea meetings and i really learned a lot while talking about other songs. Although my name isn’t on every track’s credits, it was truly valuable experience.
Q. was there a new challenge you tried for the first time as boynextdoor in this EP?
🐰: the song called <As Time Goes By>. It's a track that brings a classic ballad to the forefront and the atmosphere is emotionally calm yet very delicate, so i think it's a new attempt.
Q. you're a group that can challenge various genres, isn't that fun?
🐰: exactly. Concerts are especially fun. Since we have a variety of songs, we can show completely different sides on every stage.
Q. in another interview, you said "i haven't fully defined myself as a character yet," is there a side of yourself you discovered recently?
🐰: lately, there were many overseas schedules so i spent a lot of time in hotels and thanks to that, i realized all over again that i'm a homebody person. iIwanted to study japanese so i bought a japanese game and played it in japanese. Doing that, i felt like "ah, i'm a person who really loves home more than i thought."
Q. it was an open world game right?
🐰: yes. (laughs)
Q. i heard you like fish or aquariums.
🐰: the first aquarium i went to during the overseas tour was Kaiyukan in Osaka and it was really shocking. The main tank was huge and the layout or flow was completely different from the aquariums i've seen until now. Since then, i got a dream that i want to visit all the aquariums in various countries. It's on my wishlist.
Q. have you been to north american or european aquariums too?
🐰: i went to an american aquarium during the LA concert a while ago.Tthat's when i really felt that i want to go around aquariums all over the world.
Q. were there differences from asian aquariums?
🐰: i felt that the layout inside the tank, the directing, and even the mood were made really detailed.
Q. what is your favorite fish?
🐰: corydoras. they're small and cute and the way they eat while moving back and forth on the bottom is so lovely.
Q. do you have an aquarium at home too?
🐰: yes, i do.
Q. i heard that time spent watching fish after coming home from a schedule is healing.
🐰: that's right. Looking at fish makes my mind calm. I can't put my hands in the water and touch them because the water might get dirty, but just watching them is enough.
Q. the team name BOYNEXTDOOR contains the meaning of friendliness, what do you think is most important to maintain that friendliness?
🐰: i think it's the heart that continues to love something. The reason we stand on stage is in the end to show the things we truly cherish. When that sincerity is conveyed, empathy is created, and i think that connects to music.
Q. lastly, if there's anything you want to say to fans?
🐰: i think the fans know everything even if i don't explicitly say it like "ah, leehan likes movies so he would like this kind of concept," or "today is a cute concept." so i always set one goal in my heart before going on stage. I think that's important.
