Behind Every Smile: A Silent Story | June is Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month
We often hear it said: “Be kind, you never know what someone is going through.”
But how often do we really pause to think about what’s hidden behind a man’s smile?
June marks Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, and it’s time we talk about something we’ve ignored for far too long the silent battles of men.
🧠 Why This Month Matters
Globally, nearly 80% of suicide deaths are men. In countries like Canada, the U.K., the U.S., and yes even Sri Lanka men are disproportionately affected by mental health struggles, yet far less likely to talk about them or seek help.
Why?
Because society taught them to “man up.”
Because vulnerability was painted as weakness.
Because sharing emotions was “not masculine enough.”
So what do most men do?
They carry it.
They smile through it, joke through it, work through it.
🇱🇰 The Sri Lankan Context
In Sri Lanka, many men live under invisible pressure. The average man juggles multiple roles:
•A provider at work
•A leader or subordinate in professional chaos
•A father figure at home
•A husband balancing expectations
•A son, often still trying to live up to someone else’s dreams
They shoulder financial strain, emotional baggage, career anxieties, and family responsibilities. Yet, more often than not, they remain silent. Silent not because they have no voice, but because they’ve been taught that speaking is not part of the script.
👀 What You Don’t See
That colleague who cracks jokes in meetings? He might be battling burnout.
That man in your family who provides for everyone? He might be quietly drowning in debt.
That friend who always says “I’m fine”? He might not be.
Not all wounds bleed. Some sit quietly under the surface unseen, unspoken, and untreated.
🌿 So What Can We Do?
•Check in. Genuinely ask your male friends, brothers, husbands, and fathers how they’re doing.
•Create space. Safe, non-judgmental space where they can speak without fear.
•Challenge the stigma. Mental health isn’t a “female thing” it’s a human thing.
•Encourage help-seeking. Therapy, counseling, even just conversation every step counts.
💬 A Gentle Reminder
Be kind.
Be humble.
You never know the storm someone is hiding behind a calm face.
Let this June be more than just a campaign. Let it be a cultural shift a moment where we stop asking men to be strong in silence and start encouraging them to be real in strength.

A tribute to the timeless tales that redefined cinema for me.
From prison walls to mafia halls, from boxes with dark secrets to running shoes that made history — these movies didn’t just entertain me, they shaped the way I look at life, justice, power, and destiny.
The Shawshank Redemption – Because hope is a dangerous thing.
The Godfather I & II – Business, blood, and brilliance.
Se7en – “What’s in the box?” Still haunts.
The Green Mile – Miracles wrapped in heartbreak.
Forrest Gump – Life really is like a box of chocolates.
Goodfellas – The mafia life, told with swagger and scars.
These aren’t just movies. They’re masterpieces.
Drop your favorite line from one of these classics if you’ve been emotionally damaged (or healed) by any of them!

Poured rain, powered spirit.
Woke up to a rainy Sunday, but maybe that was nature’s way of blessing my first ever marathon.
5KM through wet roads, soaked shoes, and unstoppable energy – proud to have crossed the finish line representing Cinnamon Hotel Management at the YoungShip Run For Her.
Grateful for the challenge, the cause, and the chance to run for something bigger.
Let this be the first of many miles!

Today marks six years. Six years since one of the darkest, most heart-wrenching days in Sri Lanka’s history.
On Easter Sunday, a day of peace, prayer, and hope, innocent lives were stolen in a horrific act of terror. Hundreds of faithful souls gathered in churches—believing, praying, and surrendering to God—were taken away in an instant. They were not just victims. They were faith heroes. They believed in love, in peace, in a higher power. And they died because of a political game played in the shadows of our nation.
Three churches. Three hotels—Cinnamon Grand, Shangri-La, and The Kingsbury. Colleagues, friends, guests, and fellow Sri Lankans perished that day. Some were here to experience the beauty of our country, to support our economy, our people. They left us too soon, with no reason, no warning—only sorrow.
It’s been six years. Three presidents have taken office since. And yet, justice remains a distant promise. The ones who orchestrated this horror still walk free. Laughing. Living. Shielded by the system. But we remember. We are watching. And we will not stay silent.
To all who lost their lives—we have not forgotten you. You are not just a memory. You are part of our story, our scar, and our strength.
This black mark in Sri Lanka’s tourism and spiritual history can never be erased. But just as we were brought to our knees, we also stood back up. Stronger. United. Resilient.
But resilience is not a substitute for justice.
We demand accountability. We demand truth. We demand dignity for the fallen.
You are not forgotten.

100,000 Steps. 70+ Kilometers. 1 Mission. Achieved.
Yesterday, I completed one of the toughest physical and mental challenges I’ve ever taken on—a 100,000+ step journey that started at 1:00 AM and ended at 11:40 PM, clocking in over 70 kilometers. The last 10,000 steps were sheer grit and willpower. This wasn’t just a fitness challenge—it was a test of endurance, mindset, and heart.
At 43 going on 44, having survived two heart attacks, and never being a gym or outdoor guy until June last year, this achievement means the world to me.
The inspiration came from our coach Jeet from LIFTR Bangalore, who first completed this feat and sparked something in me. That’s when I attempted my first 60,000-step challenge, and yesterday, I finally reached the ultimate goal—100,000 steps in a day.
A massive THANK YOU to:
• LIFTR - Strength & Conditioning Gym Colombo, especially YB and Dharun, who not only guided me but showed up at One Galle Face to cheer me on—Dharun, even while recovering from surgery, your support meant everything.
• My family—my rock, my reason. My son, my mini-physio, handled my cooldowns like a pro athlete. My beautiful wife and daughter, your love and support kept me going every step.
• All my SLHGA family, Patrick, Sanjeeva, Mr. Gomez, and everyone who cheered, texted, called, and encouraged me—thank you!
• And finally, the One Above, who watched over me and gave me the strength to finish this.
This achievement unlocked the highest daily milestone in Fitbit—“The Olympian Sandal.” What’s next? Pekoe Trail challenge—and I’ll keep you all posted.
Until then, here’s what I’ve learned:
Stay active. Stay healthy.
No matter what you own, if you don’t have your health, you have nothing. I’ve lived on both sides of that truth—and I’m not going back.
Let’s keep moving.
Let’s keep living.

The 100,000 Step Challenge is ON!
This Saturday, April 19th, I’m pushing my limits—starting at 1:00 AM from Ratmalana and walking all the way through Colombo with one mission: 100,000 steps. 1 goal. Pure grit.
Big thanks to my family and the LIFTR - Strength & Conditioning Gym crew for the endless support!
Wish me luck and send your blessings on this mission!

You’ve got a sharp eye for business, a sharper tongue for sarcasm, and a softer side you protect like treasure.

Get ready for some thrilling news coming your way soon! 😎
Been There, Done That… And Still Pushing Forward!
At one point, I thought of going into ghost mode—keeping things low-key and just getting things done quietly. But then, the DMs started coming in. The calls, the messages—“Kani, keep doing what you do! Your updates, your journey, your daily grind—it inspires us.”
And that’s when it hit me. It’s not about the role, the recognition, or the applause. Even if just one person finds motivation through my journey, that’s enough. That’s the mission. That’s the purpose.
I push myself, my team, my friends, my family—because I know what 43 years of experiences, lessons, and struggles have taught me. Life doesn’t wait for a perfect moment. Prepare yourself now. Avoid the pitfalls before they happen. Choose a lifestyle that doesn’t just give you more years but makes those years better.
And trust me—I’ve never felt more alive, more focused, more in control than I do now. Every challenge? Faced head-on. Every obstacle? A stepping stone. My focus? Sharper than ever.
I’m a living example that change is possible. That pushing yourself every single day pays off. So keep going. Keep grinding. Keep showing up for yourself.
It’s brilliant, guys. Believe me. Trust me. Cheers! ✌🏼🔥 #StayFocused #KeepPushing #HealthyLiving #InspiredLife
A Journey of Transformation – A New Beginning!
105 KG ➡️ 88 KG 💪🏃♂️
The image on the left is from years ago, a time when I carried not just extra weight but also a different mindset. The image on the right, taken in January 2025, represents the person I have become—healthier, more disciplined, and more determined than ever.
Since mid-2024, I committed to real change: walking, jogging, step challenges, and weight training. But things truly elevated when I joined Team LIFTR - Strength & Conditioning Gym in November. They didn’t just put me on the right track—they transformed my journey. Now, I see far better results than I ever expected.
💪 Liftr isn’t just a gym; it’s a community. It’s a place that uplifts your lifestyle in ways beyond just fitness. The support, guidance, and motivation from this amazing team have been game-changers for me.
A huge thank you to everyone who encouraged and supported me along the way. Your belief in me made all the difference.
One of my friends from India called this my “2.0 version”—I couldn’t agree more. This is not just a weight loss story; it’s a rebirth. And there’s no turning back!
If you’re thinking of making a change, remember: every small step counts. Stay consistent, stay focused, and trust the process. The best version of you is waiting on the other side of dedication.
🔥 Big shoutout to Team @liftr_app Liftr Colombo! Thank you for taking my journey to the next level!

Another bucket list dream, another step closer—literally! This morning, I soaked in the serene charm of Kandy city with a revitalizing walk that perfectly captured its historical essence and tranquil vibes. Starting with the iconic Kandy Lake and weaving through the city’s rich heritage, I surpassed 12,000 steps in a single morning! Every step felt like a connection to the beauty and blessings of this sacred city.
Kandy’s morning magic truly set the tone for my journey to explore more enchanting cities, one by one. Here’s to embracing history, beauty, and the simple joy of walking with purpose. A lot more to tick off the list, but for now, Kandy’s charm stays with me.

From 2,000 Steps to 60,000: A Journey of Transformation and Inspiration
Last June, I made a decision that changed my life. I wasn’t someone who prioritized fitness or enjoyed the gym. My lifestyle was sedentary, and walking even 2,000 steps a day felt like a challenge. But I wanted to be healthier, more energetic, and balanced. So, my journey began.
I started small with 3,000 steps a day and gradually increased my target. Today, my average is 12,000 to 14,000 steps, with some days reaching 20,000 or 25,000. Walking became more than a habit—it became part of me.
Six months in, I joined Liftr, a gym with a supportive team that helped me improve my workouts, nutrition, and consistency. In December, I joined a 25,000-step challenge and hit 43,000 steps. Inspired, I set a bigger goal.
On January 12, 2025, I aimed for 60,000 steps in one day. After consistent walking, I achieved my goal within 16 hours. Reflecting on the journey, I realized it’s not about overexertion but discipline, consistency, and knowing your limits.
From someone who struggled with 2,000 steps to achieving 60,000 in a day, this journey taught me valuable lessons I want to share:
1.Nothing is Impossible: Start small—progress comes from persistence, not perfection.
https://t.co/9olN2ls7yU is Wealth: Prioritizing health balances all aspects of life—work, family, and goals.
3.Time is No Excuse: I once thought I was too busy, but habits create time, not take it.
If you haven’t started your fitness journey, let today be the day. Take the first step, trust the process, and see the difference. I’m living proof that transformation is possible.
Here’s to embracing your journey!

It’s truly disheartening to witness the priorities of leadership in times of crisis. The second highest income-generating state in the U.S., California, is engulfed in flames—wildfires of unprecedented magnitude are ravaging homes, communities, and lives. This isn’t a new phenomenon; California has faced these challenges for over a century. Yet here we are, watching one of the worst wildfires in modern history unfold, with over a thousand homes reduced to ashes. And what does the current administration do? Another $500 million—yes, half a billion dollars—has been approved for Ukraine as the Biden administration chooses to prolong a war that brings suffering to millions globally.
This isn’t just about America; the ripples of these misguided priorities are felt worldwide. Here in Sri Lanka, the tourism sector—a lifeline for our economy—is grappling with the fallout. Russian tourists, who traditionally bolster our industry, are no longer arriving in expected numbers. Flights are being canceled, tour operators are failing to meet commitments, and hotels are left scrambling to fill empty rooms. One major reason? This war. With Ukraine throwing every resource into a final, desperate offensive against Russia, the region is in chaos.
And yet, amidst this turmoil, President Biden and his administration seem more invested in fueling the conflict than addressing the needs of their own citizens—or the global repercussions of their decisions. California burns, its people suffer, and the world watches as American taxpayers’ hard-earned money is funneled into a war that benefits no one but a select few. It’s beyond comprehension.
It’s hard to ignore the stark contrast between this administration’s actions and the promises of leadership under Trump. He has made it clear: this war will end. Come January 20th, the senseless spending, the disregard for American lives, and the neglect of global stability will be put to rest. Trump’s stance is one of pragmatism and prioritizing the well-being of people—not just in America but worldwide.
To the Biden administration, I ask: where is your accountability to your own people? California’s devastation is a direct reflection of your misplaced priorities. While you pour resources into foreign conflicts, Americans are left to fend for themselves against disasters that demand urgent attention. Let this be a warning—what goes around, comes around. The world may seem vast, but above us all, there is an almighty force watching. Your actions have consequences, not just for others but for your own nation.
For those of us on the outside, we can only hope and wait—just nine more days—until leadership rooted in sense and accountability returns. To the people of America, I wish strength. To the people of the world, may we find peace. And to President Biden, remember: history has a way of holding us accountable.
God bless America. God bless us all. 🤞🏾💜

Since October 9th, the day I embraced my Fitbit journey, I’ve covered a jaw-dropping 804 kilometers. To put that into perspective, that’s the size of the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania—one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. And here I am, having conquered that distance in just 89 days. Imagine walking the Serengeti step by step—wow. Yo, yo, I did that.
But wait, it gets better. From January 1st, I’ve taken it up a notch. No sugar. None. And in just 6 days, coupled with daily walks and gym sessions, I’ve already dropped 1.2 kilos. It’s not just about the numbers, though—it’s about the energy, the unstoppable momentum, the drive that makes every step, every rep, every day feel extraordinary.
Picture this: morning walks setting the tone for the day, grinding through meetings, then hitting the gym in the evening, and still smashing through emails when I get home. It’s relentless, but it’s exhilarating.
And hey, if I can conquer the Serengeti (well, its size, at least) in 89 days, what’s next?
Keep pushing. Keep going. Keep rocking. Because this isn’t just a routine—it’s a lifestyle. Peace out. ✌️🏾💜

Last Christmas, I conquered a personal milestone—43,000 steps in a single day. That was my best yet, but I promised myself it wouldn’t stay that way for long. My next mission? A colossal 50,000 steps. And guess what? That moment is fast approaching. I’m eyeing the upcoming long weekend to make it happen—maybe even go beyond 50,000. Why stop there, right?
The journey to this challenge has been relentless yet rewarding. Since the start of the new year, I’ve been unwavering. Gym sessions? Not a single day skipped. Daily walks? Only one day fell short of my 10,000-step goal; every other day, I crushed it. On good days, I aim even higher—14,000 steps—and the results speak for themselves.
The energy is electric. The mindset? Unstoppable. I’m feeling fitter, stronger, and more determined than ever. To everyone cheering me on, pushing me forward, and celebrating these small victories with me—thank you. Here’s to big goals, bigger dreams, and the steps (literally) to get there. Cheers!
💜✌️🏾

Keep It Simple and Realistic for 2025
As we welcome a new year, resist the urge to make lofty promises that might feel overwhelming. Instead, focus on small, manageable goals—just one or two changes that truly matter to you. Life isn’t about perfection but progress.
Prioritize Yourself First
Take care of your own health, happiness, and growth. When you are at your best, those around you benefit too. Whether it’s eating better, letting go of toxic habits, or surrounding yourself with positive influences, these small steps can create a big impact.
Let Go of Negativity
Don’t cling to negative people, habits, or environments that drain your energy. Distance yourself from those who gossip or fail to uplift you. Instead, surround yourself with those who encourage and inspire.
Accept What You Can’t Control
Many aspects of life—work, relationships, and circumstances—are beyond our control. Instead of stressing over them, focus on what you can manage and let the rest unfold naturally.
Live Authentically
Do what genuinely makes you happy, as long as it aligns with your well-being and values. Life is short, so cherish what matters most.
Wishing You a Positive and Empowering 2025!
Kani
Today (07), I met U.S. Assistant Secretary Donald Lu at the Presidential Secretariat.
We discussed the U.S.'s support for Sri Lanka's anti-corruption efforts, recovery of stolen funds, and strengthening our economy and sovereignty.
I emphasized fostering a transparent political culture, uplifting rural living standards, and modernizing public services.
