Sophomore @VandyBoys outfielder Collin Brightwell (@C1Brightwell) put on a show finishing 5/6 on the day with 2 doubles and 4 stolen bases facing Walters State. Thinks double out of the box. Stole 59 bags his senior year at North Paulding HS.
Some thoughts from the scrimmage between Vandy & Walters State:
Tim Corbin is still a fungo master.
Every time there’s a throw down in between innings, all the players on Vandy’s bench yell “runner” just like they would if it was live.
Vandy used two left fielders a couple innings for more reps reading the ball off the bat. Only one of them actually would play it live.
Walters State made Hawkins Field looks small in BP. One player hit 5 straight bombs.
Shadows during different times of the day made it tough for hitters to see spin.
Hawkins Field renovations will look incredible when the construction is complete.
Pitching prospect after pitching prospect out there for both teams all day long.
Perfect weather. Fun day of baseball.
Freshman @VandyBoys infielder Kaleb Traylor (@ktray25_) destroying a pitch over the left field wall for an impressive HR facing Walters State. 18 years old.
True shortstop with fundamentally sound defensive actions & consistently barrels liners to all fields. Power starting to emerge as he gains strength. No brainer for a college coach.
When I was in pro baseball, I started making a lot of weak contact.
-Weak fly balls.
-Weak ground balls.
-Jammed contact.
Honestly…
I felt like if I didn’t figure it out, I was going to get released.
Then I remembered what Barry Bonds told me:
“If you’re making weak contact, your top hand probably isn’t working TO and THROUGH the baseball correctly.”
He explained that the top hand helps create the barrel path through the zone.
So every day, I practiced 3 things:
1. Top-hand-only tee swings trying to drive the ball to center field and the opposite-field gap
2. Split-grip soft toss working through the middle of the field
(2–3 inch gap between the hands)
3. Regular BP trying to hit line drives gap-to-gap with the thought of “catching” the ball with the top hand
That’s when I started squaring baseballs up and driving line drives with authority again.
