DOST Rizal emphasized that the project promotes inclusive access to knowledge and innovation, aiming to empower PDLs through continuous learning, personal growth, and better opportunities for reintegration into society.
The initiative will initially benefit 72 female PDLs and 26 jail officers, with the platform also supporting Alternative Learning System (ALS) learners, children of PDLs, and individuals seeking livelihood opportunities.
DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. supported exploring sustainable alternatives aligned with circular economy principles, noting that DOST-PTRI has already collected 3,333 worn-out flags for proper retirement and possible recycling initiatives.
DOST-PTRI Director Julius L. Leaño explained that the institute uses physical fiber recovery technology, which can recover 90–95% of the flag’s textile materials for reuse in other applications.
