Baelor Breakspear really was peak Targaryen - everything the dynasty was supposed to be but rarely was. No madness, no cruelty, no arrogance. Just competence, honor, and the respect of everyone who knew him. Even his enemies acknowledged he was the best of them.

GRRM killed him in a freak accident at a tourney because if Baelor lived and became king, there’s no Dance, no Blackfyre Rebellions spiraling out of control, no slow collapse. He would’ve been the stabilizing force that kept the realm together. His sons would’ve been raised right. The entire trajectory changes.

That’s the tragedy - the best king Westeros never had died because his brother was an idiot and a horse fell on him. Meanwhile, cruel, incompetent Targaryens lived long reigns and destroyed everything. The wrong people keep surviving in Westeros, and Baelor’s death is the clearest example of that.

If he’d lived, the Targaryen dynasty doesn’t fall to Robert’s Rebellion. The realm doesn’t fracture. But GRRM doesn’t write happy endings - he writes the brutal reality that good men die pointlessly while monsters thrive.
