My dear friend Jill Zarin and her sister Lisa have been such an important part of my life, and their beautiful mom, Gloria, held an especially precious place in my heart.

Gloria was more than the mother of my friends. She was like the mom I never had. Her love, warmth, wisdom, and presence meant more to me than words can express.

I will carry her memory, her love, and the moments we shared with me always.

My deepest love and sympathy go out to Jill, Lisa, and the entire family.

Life Lesson
One thing that I have learned is tragedy doesn't just take something from a family. It changes the terms on which everyone left has to love each other.
The families that survive aren't the ones without pain.
They're the ones who stop expecting each other to grieve identically, and start letting each other grieve at all.

Looking back, I realize my life wasn't defined by the day I lost my mother. It was defined by the ten years I had with her. Tragedy changed the direction of my life, but it did not determine the person I would become. That foundation had already been poured by a woman who believed in education, discipline, kindness, and perseverance.
Life can change in an instant. None of us can control that. What we can control is the foundation we build in ourselves and in the people we love.
My mother never saw the woman I became. But every success I've ever had carries her fingerprints.

The smoke from the Canadian wildfires is creating dangerous air quality across our region. Even if the sky looks a little clearer, the air can still be unhealthy to breathe.

Please protect yourself:

Stay indoors whenever possible.
Keep windows closed and run an air purifier or your A/C on recirculate.
Wear an N95 or KN95 mask if you must be outside.

Most importantly, please check on elderly neighbors, family members, and anyone with asthma, COPD, or other lung or heart conditions. They are especially vulnerable to poor air quality.

Let's look out for one another. Stay safe, New York.
