The editor that rejected Regev’s article was me :)

For context the article was submitted ahead of the 2019 Labour Party conference. Jeremy Corbyn was leader and a general election was a matter of months away. Debate was set to take place on the issue of Palestine, with Corbyn backing recognition of a Palestinian state.

Our newspaper was placed on every seat in the conference hall and distributed to delegates and supporters outside. Regev’s assistant called every ten minutes or so demanding the article was published in the following day’s edition. I said it would be reviewed and considered in the same way other unsolicited submissions were.

I did indeed eventually read the article, the thrust of which was why Labour Party members and socialists should support Israel. It was ahistorical crap, promoting the mythical role of the kibbutz movement as a bastion of socialism in the Middle East.

Of course this entirely stripped kibbutzim of its context as central to the zionist project of Palestinian land theft and occupation, framing it it as some kind of progressive utopia. The article was subsequently rejected as not suitable for publication.

I received an angry call soon afterwards and ended up putting the phone down. The shock and indignation at the rejection was reflective of relations with the majority of the British press which bends at every request to change headlines, amend articles and publish op-eds as they wish.

Instead I consigned it to the dustbin of history where it rightfully belonged.
