Jacob Rodriguez

Jacob Rodriguez finished his Texas Tech career as one of the most decorated defensive players in program history. After beginning his college career as a quarterback at Virginia, Rodriguez walked on at Texas Tech in 2022 and transitioned to linebacker, eventually earning a scholarship and becoming a two-time first-team All-Big 12 selection. Over his Texas Tech career, he recorded 316 tackles, 25.5 tackles for loss, 6.0 sacks, 13 forced fumbles, six interceptions and five fumble recoveries, totaling 19 takeaways. Texas Tech notes that he became the only FBS player since 2005 to finish a career with at least 300 tackles, 10 forced fumbles, five interceptions and five fumble recoveries.

His 2025 senior season was extraordinary. Rodriguez started all 14 games and posted 128 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, one sack, seven forced fumbles, four interceptions and two fumble recoveries, helping Texas Tech win its first Big 12 Championship and reach the College Football Playoff for the first time. He became Texas Tech's first Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and won the Butkus Award, Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Chuck Bednarik Award and Lombardi Trophy, while also finishing fifth in Heisman Trophy voting, the highest-finishing defensive player. He was a unanimous first-team All-American and became the first Red Raider to win any of those four major defensive awards.

Rodriguez's story is also remarkable because of how unconventional his path was: he went from a quarterback at Virginia to a walk-on linebacker at Texas Tech and ultimately became one of the best defensive players in the country. Off the field, he was named the 2026 Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year, recognizing his leadership, character and community involvement. He was also a team captain in 2024 and 2025.
