I'm a man with what some might consider to be a very good Christian upbringing, but even as a young boy I never understood what Vashti did wrong.

As an adult, I can say she was actually quite dignified, and it was her husband's men, not even her husband himself, who felt threatened by her refusal to allow herself be paraded as entertainment to drunk men.

Don't get me wrong, I always saw Esther as the hero(ine) of the story because God used her to save the Jews, but my view of Vashti has always been the same as my view of Orpah (the other daughter in law of Naomi). She too, did nothing wrong. If anything, she obeyed her mother in law after initially wanting to follow her back, like Ruth did.

The stories of Ruth and Esther were more about how God used them to accomplish his purposes, and less about how Vashti and Orpah were bad people (although to be fair not many criticise Orpah anyway)
