After yesterday's post from this Cuckarot larper, we saw a huge wave of racist comments towards Indians.

A lot of people responded by pointing out how many major anime draw from Indian mythology directly or indirectly. People talked about Naruto's chakra system, DBZ, Luffy's Bajrang Gun, and many other examples.

But all of that is still pretty superficial.

The bigger story is that when Buddhism arrived in Japan around 550 CE, it brought Shiva, Vishnu, Indra, and dozens of other Hindu deities with it. Japan adopted Buddhism as a state religion, and within a few generations the entire cosmology became NORMAL. Expected. Invisible.

Japan didn't import Indian mythology as some foreign curiosity. It absorbed an entire framework for understanding reality. KARMA. REINCARNATION. MULTIPLE REALMS OF EXISTENCE. ENLIGHTENMENT AS A GOAL.

Over time, these ideas became deeply ingrained in Japanese culture and part of everyday life.
This matters because anime creators aren't "adding" Indian influence to their stories. They're drawing from their own culture's BONES.

That's why saying anime was merely "influenced" by Indian culture doesn't fully capture what happened.
For more than a millennium, Hindu and Buddhist thought became part of the spiritual foundation of Japan itself.
