There needs to be a public debate on digital ID cards now, regardless of current polling. A light needs to be shone on arguments against Labour's "Brit"card plan. My guess polling is as it is because there hasn't been a conversation on civil rights in relation to personal data for some time...now would be the moment to smuggle in this historic ambition of bureaucrats (via the excuse of immigration to make it palatable to the public.) regardless of your politics, would you like to hand all of your personal information (who knows what other data points will be demanded in the future) to a government you do not trust? It is an oven-baked tool with the potential for political, religious, economic and regional e.t.c discrimination, not to mention the secuirty risk. All of your populations data in one place? Labour is doing our adversaries an administrative favour! The "Brit"card is a slippery slope to state-mandated digital surveillance. Parties on the right should make it clear: Anonymity is a form of protection and must protected. Anonymity is a form of freedom and must be defended.
